How much quicker???

HOW much quicker is a dx manual than an auto??
Like quarter mile time?

wight March-27th-2002 03:55 PM

some ppl already talked about this, but i think thats pretty equivalent man. vs auto.

I disagree...........although the difference might not be that much, I think that the manual will always faster than the automatic...

and who's driving the manual will also make a huge difference....

in any car. the Manual is quicker than the auto. cause of the different shift times. most of the time autos dont redline, in a manual u can hit the redline to get a bit more power. id say in a protege the manual is about 2-3seconds faster. but i would need to test 2 stock proteges out to accuratly tell.

Nope gotta go with manual. you can red line that bitch and then shift redline again then shift... The auto is going to shift sooner making the acceleration slower. Plus its harder to get a good jump using an auto. BTW I blew my auto tranny on the Grand AM last summer after I started running 1/4 miles. That thing only ran 17s too. Note to self do not drop an auto into drive from neutral while reving.

The manual DX's are 1-1.5 sec faster (driver dependent) than the auto DX through the quartermile with the same mods (intake/catback). I managed an 18 flat in my auto 1G. Groharlem (who has one of the faster 1G N/A times I've seen...I believe Jesse is around there too) and I raced a few times at one of the local strips. His manual DOHC managed a 16.6 to my auto SOHC's 18.0. Car and Driver managed a 16.9 in a manual DX (Aug-Nov 94 issue...Don't have it handy) but they are marginally slower than the DOHC in the quarter. The gap will widen dramatically after the quarter because the DOHC is more efficient and makes more power at higher RPM's.

And I thought I'd add that the 1G autos do have a hold button that allows your to hold the gear you are in to and past redline.

The biggest reason that the auto is slower is that the torque converter is a very ineffecient means of transferring power. Probably about 10-20 ft.lb of torque worth. Now if you have a big V-8, 10-20 ft.lb. of torque isn't much of a loss, but when you only start with 110 ft.lbs., the loss is very noticeable.

For an automatic, the loss is biggest when the car isn't moving (pulling away from a stop), which is why many small automatics seem like they take forever to get moving from a start. While it's pretty easy to overcome the tires on a manual Protege, getting much more than a chirp out of the automatic requires a bunch of moisture.

When it gets going, the automatic loses less, but with a slipping torque converter (by design) and only 4 gears it would lose to the stick unless the stick driver was inept.

The Protege automatic (at least the LX...I've never driven a DX) performs better than most, though. The torque converter is fairly tight, and the engines strong low and mid-range torque means that it pulls fairly strongly for a small auto. My mother's '94 Civic EX (VTEC) auto only pulls hard from about 5500rpm or greater, but mostly makes noise due to losses in the torque converter.
