help with my friend's mx-3

One of my friends have a 1996 mx-3 with a 4 cyl...

Great car, I tried it yesterday because I didnt believe him, this car have no low rpm torque, the car isnt powerfull at all between 1000rpm and 3500rpm, once it hit 3500-4000 the engine is real strong... you have to shift at 4000rpm or more because the car have no power....

My 323 have more torque on the low end than is car.... I would smoke him off the line.. then when he hit high rpm he smoke me...

What whould be the problem on his car?

I tought it could be the mass air flow...

Maybe the VICS is stuck open? (I don't even know if the 1.6 has vics)

It doesn't have a lot of power below 3000 rpm.

There's probably not anything wrong with it. The old 1.6L DOHC B6 is a pretty gutless motor at low rpm IMHO.

If it's modded, this could be the problem. When you add aftermarket parts to these engines, you have to be REALLY careful not to install parts with too much bias towards top-end power because the lost low-end torque will usually make the car slower in any speed contest that involves 1st or 2nd gear. You can obviously make up for this with higher revs, but this requires solid lifters because the HLA's will float at 6500-7000 rpm and kill any semblence of power above this. :(

And no, the 1.6L B6 does not have VICS. :)
