Golfers?
 

I just started golfing last year, I went quite a few times, and I'm not too bad, could be MUCH MUCH better though. I have some really shitty clubs that I got for free (like k-mart specials, pretty much), and I'm looking for a new set for the spring. I don't really want to spend more than $300-350 on a complete set (including woods). Anyone have any suggestions? The only other set I've swung that I really like at the Wilson Fat Shafts. The few balls that I've hit with them, have been much straighter and farther than with my shitty clubs.

I started playing golf last summer too. I got tired of paying to rent beat up broken clubs so I bought some cheap clubs and have been very pleased with them. They are Wilson 1200 Gear Effect. They came as a set with woods and irons and I got them for $130 on sale. They are usually around $200. However, if you are willing to spend $300-350 dollars on a set of clubs these probably aren't for you. Your probably looking for better more expensive clubs.

Just out of curiousity, what was your best score? I want to know how bad I really am:)

I am a golfer. I have been golfing for like 5 years now. I picked it up when I was 18. I am usually on most courses about 10 over par so yes I am a good golfer now but that is with much practice. I use Callaway Irons and Woods. They are oversized clubs if you understand that. Well gtg see ya

The best I got was (don't laugh) a 109. I was freaking pumped that day! :) Not too bad considering I can't use my drivers for crap. This year if I get new clubs, I'm determined to break 100! :)

for that amount of $, youd best go with used clubs if you want anything good, imo. for irons, id go with some ping eye2's (black dot, streel shafts) or armour 845's (the original ones). as for woods, id go for older calloways (gbb, warbirds, even steelheads if u can get a good price). personally, i have cleveland ta-3 irons, forged cleveland wedges, titelist fairway woods, and a nike driver. oh yeah, im 17, have been playing for about 6 years, caddy, and play for my high school. im usually in the high 80's, need to work on my game a little.

WARNING, its pretty addictive, I played for over an hour straight and I don't even like golf that much.

Addictive?? I guess so, I came across this a long time ago and all the guys at work played it constantly... we got to the point where we could shoot a 19 (Mastered all the angles... except 1)

I don't play a lick of golf, but I work at the Country Club on campus:D

109 is not bad. The golf courses that are close to me are 9-holes and the best I shot was a 50. I can drive pretty good but I can't putt that well.

I'm a horrible golfer on a full size course - driving ain't my thing.

But I'm pretty good on the local pitch & putt - it's full 18 holes (NOT mini-golf!!), and the holes range from 60 yards to 110 yards. Par for the course is 55 (the 110 yard hole is a "par 4 dogleg" - to hit the green in 1 you have to go over some trees, so they make it a 4) - my best score is 57. My buddy and I gamble all summer when we play, usually several times a week (a round only takes about 2-3 hours).

Funkdaddy - for clubs, used is a great idea. You can get some very nice clubs if you go used. I would also suggest investigating composite vs. steel shafts. The composites are very popular because they give you better distance, but you do lose some of the control due to the increased shaft flex, especially as a relative newbie. There is a reason the pro's use steel shafts - often, composites can make a bad amateur worse. You'd rather hit the ball 250 yards straight up the fairway than 300+ in the woods. Equipment plays less of a role than you think - pricey clubs don't help your game; just look at all the hackers on the course with $2000+ Taylor Made sets - they'd play just as bad with rentals.
