Escort Pony?

I was driving home today and saw a Ford Escort and on the front quarter panel where they write the model it said "Pony". Anyone know about this model?

It's the lowest end model of the Escort that was offered. It has no A/C, no PS, manual tranny, and no power accessories. It has the exact 88HP 1.9L engine that the standed LX model has. It's really nothing special.

Hmmm, sounds a lot like my 323, except it's more powerful

Except my car is the bomb

The 1.9L is a real dog. Those engines really have no potential primarily because they can't breath. Mate it to an automatic transmission and you'll get no where fast, lol.

I think the only effort to make anything of that motor was done by Rouche Racing (I think) for use in the SCCA Spec Racer Fords. Yet, those engines only produce 105-110 HP.

That reminds me, a couple days ago, I saw an Escort wagon that apparently was trying to be an Oldsmobile 442.

Blow up? Kinda. Mine dropped a valve seat at 72k miles (6 months out of warrantee). Can you say pissed?

I think I know which one you're talking about with the 5.0 emblems. He was just some stupid kid who "craves attention" (in his own words).

Heh, I don't think the 1.9L is even strong enough to handle nitrous.

I think its hilarious you all are doggin on the 1.9 so badly.

I'm a member on the escort boards and read about the 1.9L quite frequently

I see lots of people over there bullshitting about how thier Escort LX (it has more options than the Pony model) ran a low 16 stock or their tuned LX ran a high 15. Total crap, but they can get into the 16's if they are tuned correctly.

The pony is actually pretty quick seeing how it has only the alternator to turn with its crank pulley and the fact it weighs like 2100-2200lbs stock. I've seen one run a high 16 STOCK.

And the 1.9 was poorly designed, but that is just because the exhaust manifold and intake manifold were ridiculous restrictive. the 1st gen Escort GT had the 1.9 with a much better designed header and intake manifold which was rated at 110hp.

I've seen dyno charts of tuned 1.9's up to over 120whp. They aren't great, but they arent total garbage either...and are actually quite reliable little engines. They are a primitive design, dating back to the 60's, and they do have more problems than the BP that they shoved in the GT models.
Maybe it's just my bad luck with the 1.9. I dunno. I just have yet to see anything impressive really come out of one. I absolutely loved my Escort when I owned it. I, in fact, still miss it, lol. However, the lack of quality and modifications to the basic CVH engine are disappoining. Not only are the intake/exhaust manifolds restrictive, but the head is very restrictive too.

The Pony's can pull better times than the LX due to the fact that they don't have parasitic losses from accessories such as power steering and A/C. Nothing really worth writing home about. It still has a plain Jane 1.9L motor.

Every time I visit a junk yard, just about 2nd gen 1.9L has had its head removed (probably for core) and the pistons are quite damaged; very similar damaged to what happened to mine.

As far as the ERDT list goes, I'm a member as well (mostly lurking). There ARE some good people over there, but not many who are into doing anything more than a simple bolt on. IMHO, nobody there really wants to spend any money real performance. I actually spend more time monitoring the yahoo groups lists, especially the EGT list.

Hey now.....The 1.9L wasn't that bad.

I had a 93 Escort LX Auto, Air, PS, PB, but no power windows, locks, or radio. Bought it for $8700 brand new. My mom drove it for 30K and I traded my parents my 89 Daytona for it because the trade in value was the same. (the 89 Daytona's blue book was 2900 with 115K and the escorts was the same with only 30K). I figured more reliable and better gas milage. I put 50K on it and sold it for 3200 to some 16 yr old girl for her first car. She is still driving it around. I took awsome care of it and so did she. Has around 150K on it now and still doesn't smoke.

And for those of you who think it was terribly slow. My friend had a 98 Honda Civic DX auto and we both raced from 0 to 85. Traction was obviously not an issue. Just floor it and sit back. I was ahead by 1.75 cars at 85mph. Driver skill was not a factor.

I consistantly got 30+ mpg. The only thing I hated about it was the fact that it was loud. You could bearly hold on a conversation when you were doing 70mph unless you were yelling.
