Email Updates or No Spam - YOU MAKE THE CALL!

Recently, it seems our email update system has been purposely disabled by the administrator(s) of the forum. I assume this is in response to the complaints about spam and unsolicited email that has been sent to some members, and the fact that those members' email addresses were "lifted" from the forum database.

Personally, I'd like to see the email system working again. Any spam generated from this club's email list is just a drop in the bucket of the total number of unsolicited emails I get every day.

I have sent a PM to Jason, telling him that I will post this poll. Hopefully, he will check it out. And, whatever the outcome may be, he will take appropriate action. If we vote to leave the email function "off", or if we vote to re-enable the automatic notifications.

I can't be sure he'll listen, but it is worth a shot - even if the members collectively vote to keep the email notices turned off as they are now.

Place your votes! Democracy in action - it's a beautiful thing.....;)

i don't care. :D
i don't have my turned on anyways cause it distracts me from all the porn offers i get i my inbox... lol

I was hoping someone would post a poll on this.
Personally I would like to see the notifications turned back on, its much easier to keep track of subscribed threads that way. Sure you can just check them in your profile, but thats more tedious than just checking your email. My .02

I wonder if they can default it to 'off' but still leave it working?

ask jason.

I don't see how that would have to do with the spam. I can still get email from the site. I still get email for PMs. I think it is just so you can use the User CP without getting your mailbox overloaded.

I really do not like the notification. Especially with the worthless info of someone posting to a specific thread.

Also the notification is currently defaulted to automatically notify if someone new post to a thread. If you take off the default and make people physically check mark the box for the notification, this will no longer be an issue. If you want notification, check mark the box.

I'd like to get notifications... What I would do is open an account in Hotmail, set the spam filter as exclusive and authorize only emails from the sender of this list. All other senders will be ignored.

Or if I can't/don't want to use hotmail, I would download Cloudmark Spamnet. This software is free and gets rid of most spam. Well, actually it creates a new folder in Outlook where all spam is diverted to so you can later review it or send to spam heaven.

This would be fine - so long as the option is available. Right now, only PM notifications get through.

At this time, you can't even send member-to-member email (unless you already know the other's email address). If you view a member's profile, and choose "click here to email "so and so", the message is that "this function has been disabled by the administrator".

I did send a PM to Jason, and asked him to veiw this poll and thread if he gets the chance, and decide from there.

I frequent a car sound discussion board also, and the email notification is "off" by default there - you have to check a box. That would be totally acceptable to me, so long as the option is at least available.

hmm. I didn't realize the email function didn't work in the profile. I guess it is related to the spam harvesting. I think it was a more or less one time thing, or won't happen too much. I'd re-enable the email. Yeah you can change the default Email notification in the control panel or maybe the profile, somewhere in there :).

Don't know how plausible it is, but it would seem like an optional email field with opt-in notification would make everyone happy.

makes no difference to me...seeing as how I don't subscribe to ANY threads....as I KNOW there is going to be stuff to read here EVERY time I come to the board...so that is what I do...just come here...and start at the top and work my way to the bottom.

I'd say leave it off. Spam sucks.
