Which Car to buy?
 

Well, sooner or later i have to part with my 2001 Pro. Mah dad is being in asshole so when i go to college i will have to buy myself a car. I just wanted peoples opinions on which car i should get. Keepin mind i am not rich and just know started saving up money.(only got 200$). So please give me your opinions on which car i should get. Most likelfy it will be my 1st project car. Thanx

Will you be working to pay for your vehicle when in college? Also if you finance you will be looking at either a co-signer (aka you parents) or getting reamed with a very large loan percentage. Also what does "mah" mean?

Yes i will be working(dont need to pay tuition), my mom is gonna help me out, and mah means my.

my suggestion is to get the most relaiable car for that money. when you are in school, you will have much less time to be working on your car... much less the money for the parts for your car... gotta buy that beer ya know?

i spent about 3 grand on my 97 dx... all my cars i paid cash for for about 700-3000 bucks so there are nice cars out there for 2g's... just keep your eye out and stay away from them chevy cavalers!

mah suggestion would be:
-another portege sedan! (relatively budget-priced)
-kia
-hyundai

the pro is a damn good car (as u already know) and will get u around thru and after school. the others, well... all u really need is a "college" car, something to get u around... and i believe they both come with 10yr warranties? something to think about when asking a co-signer to help u out. :)

well for starters....I would think you are going to need somewhere between $4000 nad $5000 total for a DECENT car....and what I would do is find the most dependable car for the money and not worry about being able to mod it or how bad it is.....as you are in school....and there are more important things....just make sure you have something that will get you around and you won't HAVE to spend money on it to keep it running.

Also, look for a good insurance company. If you get a safe, reliable car they will usually offer discounts for things like ABS, anti-theft systems, etc. If you get something fast you'll pay through the nose in rates (I know, I'm in the same boat. They want to double my rates because of an accident even though I was not at fault.)

Plus you can get a good-grade discount from some companies. Someone told me they get a discount for being in a fraternity, but I dont know about that.

I'd suggest an older Honda Accord (early 90's) because they're super-reliable and have lots of aftermarket support. Or, a '91 or '92 Nissan Maxima 5-speed. 192hp VG30DE (V6) reliable, fast to begin with, and pretty good aftermarket support. OR, another Protegé. I'd go with the Maxima, but that's just me.

You can't get anymore reliable than Honda or Toyota.

If you're looking for something used, try to find a '97-'00 Camry or you can look for a 95+ Accord/Civic.

Those would be nice cars to have, but for $2,000? You can get plenty of reliable cars for that much, but they'll be older most likely. A Honda with 100,000+ miles is nothing uncommon. Don't be afraid if it has higher miles, just be sure to check it over really good...take it to a mechanic whom you know will look it over good and warn you if there are any problem. I've forgotten to do this in the past and gotten really screwed over....

im assuming the pro is ur dad's.
tell him to co-sign on another pro. u got $2k from ur mom, and another 2 bills right? $2200 on a down, ur in college showing some initiative for a better future, get a nice part-time job to pay the monthly...
sell ur parents on what ur willing to do, and show them all the positives of a new ride as well as negtives of a used car.

Accord and Camry sedan rates are dirt cheap for insurance as well. My wife will be 50 a month less than me (with me as a driver) on our new EX-V6 when she finally decides to buy the damn thing. I asked they said cars like Buicks, etc (nice boring stuff) are the cheapest damn things to insure, but buy an Accord coupe and the rate skyrockets (ricers I guess, but the Protege's rate is pretty high as well).
