Black steel rims?

What's the dealyoyo with the black steel rims? I see it on a lot of hopped-up cars. People spend thousands to make their car look sweet and then put these cheap $25 rims on. Is it a performance issue, or is it supposedly "cool"?

Straight from Sport Compact Car magazine: (in an article about the origins of rice)

"Sticky tires, then, were mounted on smaller steel wheels for a gearing, grip, and financial advantage. Before long, those who weren't racing but wanted to look like they were, started popping off their front hubcaps and saving money for two 17-inch wheels instead of four. What started for a reason on the mean streets of El Monte, Calif., is now repeated blindly in Rumsey, Ky."

2? why 2 17's?

b/c they were front wheel drive they would only by 2 rims for the back.

lol. I swear, I get a kick out of these losers every time I see 'em. "Hey, I'll put an 18 pound steel wheel on the front of my car to make it faster." For the money one spends on 2 blingin' 17s, they could buy a decent set (read: 4) of light 14's (I.E. Koseis). Unsprung weight is key. Ricers suck.

How exactly does this in any way, shape or form relate to Third Gen Protege's, and their Suspension and Brakes? Please do not post irrellevant topics like this in the wrong section. This is an off-topic, topic.

There was a guy on this site and on msprotege site who was selling black rims. They were on a P5. Nice car, good brand of rims I am sure, but the color is ugly as hell! Sorry, just can't seem to understand why any one would want that! Gunsmoke metal is one thing (looks good), but black glossy rims?! :barf:

Oh, no, that means my old '93 Escort, which was missing 2 hubcaps because they fell off, was RICE! I'm sooo embarrassed...:D

changing the rear two rims on a FF car is freaking retarded. not only does it make the front rims look more ugly than they are, it makes it look like you put them on for performance but forgot your car isnt rear wheel drive

Yes i agree that does look really retarded, as for the black steel wheels, i have a set i use in the winter time with snow tires on them. if guys run those steelies in the summer... then who knows... maybe they like how shitty it looks.

I was thinking of getting 2 for my front tires for when I race. I don't like burning up the ones on my rims, so I figured since I already ahve a set of bald tires that I could mount them on some cheap steelies and go racing... :(

5SpeedP5 August-18th-2003 12:07 AM

put 'em on your stock rims! :D easy solution

that's what i did. keep the 17's on the back and use my stock steelies for the track. don't go bald though, like i did.. cant hook up for shit.

Race and have steel belts coming from your tire splicing off  You may have a blow out and mess up your shit once it gets fixed. Don't want to do that! :p Then it's car versus concrete wall rather than car versus bambi! ;)
