Ardvarks?
 

Just heard on the news today, we didn't evolve from monkeys, aparently Scientists anounced this week they found that we came from the Ardvark. Just thought this bit was too good to pass up, can't wait to hear when the next animal they say we came from is.

We came from squirrels :-)

A misconception of evolution is that we originated from a particular clade (animal group) that exists today. The underpinnings of evolution suggest that the various groups (such as hominids) originated from the same ancestral (now likely extinct) group. Thus we did not "come from monkeys", but rather, both groups share a common ancestral species which through divergence and evolution led to the present distribution of Modern Primates.
Current debate that i am familar has indicated that perhaps Lemurs and Hominds originated from the same ancestral stock.
Interestingly, humans have much in common with the whole of Kingdom Animalia. studies with mtDNA (Mitochondrial genetic info), indicate that in fact, the first 13 base pairs of mtDNA is exactly alike for the entire Kingdom (except w/ some types of Nematodes).
Compare this with similarities in organ/body structure of the various groups, and certainly, it seems quite logical that we had to evolve from something, one way or another. But, because that "parent" species did in fact diverge and assume new characteristics (speciate), then what IS unreasonable is to expect to find these ancestral lineages still in existence.

I think it´s funny that it was you who gave a long detailed explanation on evolution (evolution... fossil... fossil boy).

As for the Aardvark... if we did come from them, that would explain why most humans have the tendency to stick their nose where it doesn´t belong.

i learned a long time ago that there's no point in stating what i believe in these debates. no one's mind is going to be changed.

Fiction Yes; Science, definitely NO. But not to worry, many people can still accommodate both spirituality and evolution in their lives without conflict.
