3000GT/Stealth ?
 

Just wondering what people think of the 3000gt. A friend of mine is looking at one (same friend that was looking at the mkIII supra) He's looking at getting at a stealth or 3000GT, doesn't really want the VR4/RT twin turbo, as their prices are still high and added maintence of the awd and turbos. Currently I think he's looking at the DOHC versions and is debating about going with a 5spd or auto. (he can't quite decide which yet) Anyway I've heard some bad things about the ATX but can't quite find much more trouble, other than the normal sports car issues. Anyone have experience with these? Also anyone driven the SOHC versions vs. the DOHC? The guy is pretty tall and doesn't really fit well in many cars, ie tall body and short legs. (doesn't even fit well in a GTP!)

Never driven one, but worked on a few. Check to see if it's burning oil; Mits V6s are notorious oil-burners. Lots of things seem to spring leaks on them, but leaks can be fixed. Like any sports car, make sure it hasn't been abused.

personally i would go with the stealth 5spd, and later if you want you can drop a turbo in it.

in either case Mark_02DX is right, a friend i had in highschool had a 1992 (i think) VR4 and that thing would suck down more oil than gas!!

like any other car, look it over really well and make sure its in good condition, oh and try to get all of the history you can like reciets.

If your friend isnt going to get the vr4 then I would suggest NOT getting one. Those things are heavy and slow. I, personally, don't like those cars in general. They look alright but I am a HUGE power to weight ratio freak and those cars just kill it.

Ditto TrexPro's comments. These cars are capable of pretty good performance in AWD/turbo form, but they're just too big and complicated for their own good IMHO. Basically, they use a tremendous number of fancy gizmos (twin turbos, AWD, 4WS, electronic shocks, etc.) to approximate the performance of a smaller, lighter, less powerful and much simpler car. :rolleyes: Some people get off on this, but I don't. I like lightness and simplicity. :)

Also, if your friend's serious about handling and performance, forget the non-turbo FWD versions. They are simply too heavy, and the SOHC cars are dogs... my old SCCA Stock-class CRX Si could pull on them at the dragstrip easily. :rolleyes: ~160 hp may not sound too bad until you factor in the 3400+ lb curb weight. :( Hnadling-wise, heavy weight and FWD do not generally mix well, and these cars are a textbook example... in the tight stuff, they simply will NOT turn.

Also, if you're friend's tall, I really don't think this car will work. They may look big, but the interiors are actually quite cramped, and they have NO headroom.
