A limited edition performance tuned 2001 Mazda MP3. This vehicle is one of only 250 units sold in Canada and offers an incredible driving experience.

This entirely stock vehicle is fitted with a high-output engine and a number of performance-oriented components from racing suppliers including a mild engine and suspension upgrades from the car tuner Racing Beat in Anaheim, California.

The 2.0-liter DOHC four gets an algorithmic power curve from reprogrammed ignition timing. That and the Racing Beat exhaust downstream of the catalyst are worth 10 horsepower and 7 pound-feet of torque producing 140 horsepower and 142 pound-feet of torque.

Suspension is supported by firmer springs and thicker roll bars, Tokico shocks and stiffer control-arm bushings. The power to the road is applied through 17-inch cast aluminum Racing Hart wheels encased in 205/45ZR-17 Campiro 40 rubber controlled by leather-bound Nardi three-spoke wheel mated to a European-spec steering rack which offers quicker, more precise steering and better on-centre feel.


The MP3 badge is derived from the top-of-the-line 280-watt Excelon Z828 head unit which hinges down to expose the CD slot, and can be removed to prevent theft. A screen in the centre of the unit displays a wide variety of images, including a simulated video clip of a McLaren Formula One car racing around a track. The sound is delivered through two 5x7 front door speakers, two 6x9 rear-hat shelf speakers and a massive trunk-mounted 10-inch subwoofer.

Inside, unique-to-MP3 charcoal trim with silver accents, a lovely Nardi three-spoke wheel, aluminum pedals and a shortened shift lever for quicker ratio-swapping supply a good balance of visual and functional improvement.

The electric blue colour is exclusive to this model. A deep front air dam with integrated driving lights, rocker panel extensions and a large rear deck spoiler complete the package.
