mp3 player for the mazda 5

I am currently negotiating the price for a mazda 5.
I would like the cd player to be replaced by an mp3 player. But the dealer wants $750 for it since the mp3 player comes with a 6 cd changer (useless combo in my opinion).
What are my options? Will I be able to have a mp3 player installed by a 3rd party without messing up the dash? Can a portable mp3 player be hooked up (don't wants to use the FM transmitter)? Any other options?

Thanks

new

We just picked up my wife's Mazda 5 last week. SO I haven't had a chance to do a complete run-down on it.

We did get the GT version as it's known here in Canada. W/ the 17" wheels, sun-roof, and 6 disc/speaker sound system.

Can anyone confirm if this head unit can play MP3's?? I know it's as easy as throwing a CD in .....but I'm sure others can benefit with this knowledge.

Thanks.

According to the Canadian Owners Manual, only the in dash changer plays
mp3's. I was slightly disappointed, however I was not willing to pay the $695 cdn
for the upgrade. Ill run an I Pod.

Nope

My touring model with the CD changer does not play mp3s. The US manual seems to indicate that unless the CD mode selector button actually has "MP3" printed on it next to the CD changer logo, it will not play MP3s.

I put an MP3 disk in it and it did nothing.

Bummer. I was hoping to have 4+ Gig of MP3s loaded in the van.

Yeah. I tested it out the same day I posted this and was disappointed! In this age and time you'd think they would put a simple MP3 in!

I noticed that Mazda does sell a MP3-enabled 6-disc changer in their accessories section for some ungodly amount of money.. $520! I'd like the ability to play MP3s, but not that bad.

Why, oh why couldn't they just give us an audio-in jack on all the stereos? Is that really so hard?

I installed an overhead dvd and it plays mp3. Now I have DVD and MP3 for $250.
