transmission fluid capacity
currently at the dealer getting a transmission fluid change.
I bought amsoil atf but only 8 quarts. The dealer tells me the transmission uses a 15 quart capacity. What gives? I looked on Amsoil's website and the owners manual and they both say 8 quarts. Anybody know? I never heard of an automatic transmission taking 15 quarts. thanks in advance |
sounds like a confused dealer, 15qt sounds like a lot for a car. You can also buy extra and see when it gets to the proper level.

Extra fluid in the trans - I think would just overflow, assuming there's an opening somewhere. There is presently air space to 'cushion' the fluid expansion due to temperature. Other than causing more drag, or spewing some fluid out, I don't think there would be a huge problem.
Don't confuse this with too much oil in the engine though, that can get to the point of having the pistons try to 'pump' oil on their way down and can put major pressure on internal parts. |
in most trannys, they have a overflow tube ontop of the tranny. it lookes like a 2inch long straw coming outta the casing.
maybe they did a full flush of the tranny? converter, cooler, tranny? thats the only way youd get alot of fluid in. but 15 sounds like alot even if it was bone dry. LUK what happens. |
