Are you looking for an air filter, or an intake system?
By carbon, you mean you want it in carbon fibre I'm assuming?

Can someone confirm they made the Mazda3 with a 1.6? I didn't think they had, 2.0 and 2.3 only...

Anyways, if you're looking for an intake, PM member 'Kargoboy'. He sells Simota intakes for much less than you would spend on something like Injen. Everyone seems to love them, so that's your best bet.

The Mazda 3 2.3L auto makes 156 hp. Getting it to 200 hp would not take over $1200, IME. Starting cheap: Denso iridium plugs (+4-6hp for only $60), CAI, Magnaflow Catback exhaust, and a street legal header should give the auto at least a +50 hp for about $1000-$1400. Mazda 3 post-project whp = 206. That's how I did it anyway.

However, after driving a black 2006 Speed6 DISI Turbo with only 9k AND an owner who put in a magnaflow catback and CAI, I'm killing myself to justify trading my 3S in for it - it screams with absolutely no torque steer, and I tried but could not force any of the wheels to even get light. Dealer asking price $22,000. Can I say no?

I would need to see a dyno to agree with any of those HP gains you're claiming. 4-6hp from spark plugs is pretty far fetched imo.

i/h/e maybe make 20-30 hp max. If you have new plugs and i/h/e, you most likely run about 170-180 horsepower. Unless you have a dyno run that says otherwise.

As for the MazdaSpeed6, it sure is a quick car, and the AWD really helps control the power. Go for it if you can justify the cost!

Well, I registered as "Dingo" (dumb wild Australian dog) for a reason: I'm a Mazda 3/mazdaspeed enthusiast, but certainly not a tuner expert - more of an immature older guy who still likes to race, I mean drive, sporty imports that can also serve as daily drivers/commuters. So my bad for quoting hp at the "crank" and projected hp for mods based on what different techs have told me (I'm sure they are referring to added "crank" hp). And I'm sure the difference is that a car loses hp efficiency during the transfer from crank to the wheels? So, if all cars are equally efficient, the difference between crank hp and whp would be relative?

That said, I trust your opinion that the above mods would not meet my projected 50hp at the wheels. And I assume you're saying the project mods would give 20-30 hp at the wheels? So, you're projecting +20-30 hp at the wheels? (Could you estimate the added crank hp?) - the problem for me is my projections (hp/weight ratio, projected added 1/4 speed, 0-60 etc.) are based on manufacturer, reviewers, commonly cited hp numbers, which I'm sure are all crank hp, no?). Thus, unless I misunderstand, it's more helpful for me (though I'm sure not as accurate) to deal with crank hp #'s. Is the Dingo making sense?

Anyway, since a turbo kit is out of the question for my 3s (every tech, and the mazdaspeed techs have told me I'd almost have to do an engine swap to do it the way I want it (maintain durability/longevity/reliability) on the stock ford 2.3L engine.

I'll change the premise of the original post a bit.
I have an 04 3s manumatic 4 speed. No engine mods (yet). What (specify brands/dynos if available) will deliver the most whp bang for the buck? Your budget is $1600 installed.
I appreciate all informed decisions.
