New Member, 2004 Mazda 3, starting mods

First let me say, I'm a bodyman, not a mechanic, so while I feel comfortable moding my engine, I have limited knowlage on the subject to start with.

2004 Mazda 3, 2.3L, 4 speed manumatic.

I'm looking to put about an 8 psi turbo kit on. What do I need to know first?
( ex: will 8 psi blow up my 4 cyl? )

Is there a complete kit avalible for the manumatic ?
( I did find 1 for about 5G.....)

Are there issues i'll run into with it that i wouldnt with manual config?

And also, I discovered that it is electroniclly governed for 114 mph. That WILL NOT be ok.
How can get around electronic governing?

This is alot of questions for one post, and i'm sure there probly buried in these forums somewhere, but this is my first post, and i'm looking specifically for the 2004 2.3 manumatic model. so I figured this would be easyier.

Thanks for any help you guys can offer.

Well first of all welcome to the club. I hope you enjoy your stay, and I highly urge you to do lots, lots, lots, and then a lot more reading and researching about forced induction before jumping into something you're not comfortable with. Your personal comfort level with the project will be most important anyway..

If you wanna go turbo with your automatic, don't have your hopes up too high. Most econobox auto trannies are not very strong, and won't handle any more than 200HP too well .. so even if your engine can take it then chances are that your tranny won't. I would say 6-7 psi would be alright on stock internals and a stock tranny. If you're willing to really get into it and drop some cash then forged internals for the engine, and a higher duty torque coverter & valve body for your tranny would be a wise investment. No sense in spending thousands on a turbo kit then blowing up your engine/tranny right? The engine is probably good at 8 psi but not on a daily basis. You could probably run at 8 psi for a long time if you baby it, but then on the other hand you could probably blow the engine at a mere 5 psi if you're constantly romping on it. It all kinda depends on how big a maniac you are..

Any complete turbo kit for the 2.3L should fit regardless of transmission. A tranny cooler would also help with the automatic if you truly decide to go turbo.

As far as the electronic governor is concerned, try searching around the forum and see if anyone's successfully gotten around it yet. It comes up a lot, so I'm sure someone's figured it out.

Lastly, good luck with everything. Feel free to ask questions, but you're best off doing massive amounts of research based on other people's past experiences. Learn from their mistakes and make sure you don't mess up the same thing :)

Yeah I do get on it alot, most hard acceliration, Hawaii, has no law on acceliration, other than bikes one wheel law, but they are hard core on speeding. So if i run 5psi, with tranny cooler, i should be ok until I can upgrade Int's&Tranny right?

I'd say you'd be alright .. but you still don't wanna push it too hard. I would highly advise against flooring it completely at all times, and try to develop a different style of driving. If you wanna preserve the auto tranny for as long as possible, try getting used to driving only in tiptronic mode and let off the gas a bit before shifting from one gear to the next. Don't take your foot off all the way, but just ease off a bit to take off the additional stress of the tranny.

My Protege5 is tiptronic 4-speed as well, and I am planning the exact same thing as you so I've done my fair share of reading up on this. So anything I'm telling you is simply information I found while researching my turbo project, but I can't assure you it's all right cuz I haven't actually done it yet myself either. I do have the turbo sitting in my garage, but I'm not sure if I wanna go through with the install yet or not. I keep on second guessing myself on whether it's a good idea or not, and I'm still not 100% about it..
