MS3, California emissions and Cold Air Intake?

I need some help.
I bought my MS 3 in September and ordered the MS cold Air Intake. I was told Mazda engineering had put a hold on it.

Last week I read that they were available again so I called the dealer. They told me it was available .....but it was not California emissions approved.

I checked the website again and saw that it was listed as emission approved in all 50 states.

So I called again and got the service parts manager on the phone. He explained that my MS3 has california emissions on it and the CAI that is on the website will not fit it.

Has anyone who lives in California heard of this?
Has anyone in California been able to get a CAI from Mazdaspeed that fits?
Does anyone know if this is true and there is a difference between cars with and without Cal Emissions?

I would like to keep the warranty so that is why I am not going aftermarket.
If I do go aftermarket, does Cobb or CP-E have any issues fitting a car with Cal Emissions?

Any help would be appreciated

I remember reading that the Mazdaspeed intake for the MS3 has been discontinued for a number of reasons. Maybe CARB approval is one of them. Hydrolock definitely is.

Have you looked into Injen intakes?
http://www.streetunit.com/Injen_Cold...3_p/sp6062.htm

When I bought one for my Protege5, they were carb "pending" like the MS3 one is now. In a few months the one for the MS3 will be legit, but until then, you won't get a ticket because it's pending...at least that's how it worked with mine, back in '03.

I've never had a problem from the law with my Injen. :)

I also just kept my stock intake for the service dept. to see if I ever found myself at the dealership for anything...which I never did and my stock stuff is still brand new, sitting in a box.

As a Mazdaspeed dealer, I can confirm that the Cold Air Intake for the Mazdaspeed 3 is still on hold and is not available for sale. We have been in contact with Mazda and they have yet to update us with any new information on to when a CAI will be available.

As far as being CA Emission compliant, according to MazdaUSA.com the MS CAI meets the standards of all 50 States.

Thanks Chris,

See the attached link.

If Mazda has the part on hold, then why is it offered on the web site?

Per the web site and my dealer said this is the correct part for MS3 with out the Cal emissions and they are shipping. They said it simply won't fit a Cal emissions MS3.

Thanks for your help.

It'll fit, but forget about your warranty.

It's still on the site, because it's been taken off the shelf in the last couple months. People are hydrolocking their engines and Mazda doesn't want to give any more free motors away so they're changing the design of the CAI.

Morning guys...
As of 9:50am Arizona time.... these cold air intakes are still being held for inspection as per mazda. This part# GRMS-8M-L29 is the exact same number they have had for this part since its development. So, it has nothing to do with CA emissions. It is simply not available for sale at this moment. We will keep you updated as we find out new info. Thanks and happy holidays!

Hydrolocking has nothing to do with why it was pulled. Anybody that hydrolocks with this setup is a freakin moron. My dad drives in southern florida without any problems. People who whine about hydrolock should just complain that they're to dumb to slow down when fording streams. AEM introduced an airflow straightener which takes care of the CEL's.

Opinion that he got a mystery CEL after installing the intake? Opinion that the fuel pump had to be changed and the ECU reflashed? Did you even read the links?

I could keep going with thread after thread of people who have had problems with the Mazdaspeed CAI on their MS3. Opinions, experience, call it what you want. A lot of, if not most people are not happy with that CAI, and that's fact.

Really, thread after thread. Considering how many hundreds they sold and the few that had problems, the odds are in my favor. They only pulled it because of CARB. I can show you many more that had no problems including myself, my dad and 4 other locals. And yeah, two of the threads you posted were most likely user caused problems so I stick with the opinion statement.
