Mazda 3i /Manual transmission upshift rev problem?

Hi everybody-

Just joined the forum today. I am the proud new owner of a silver Mazda 3i sedan. Wanted the economy of the smaller engine.

I must say, I really do love this car. However something is starting to upset me- as I drive this car more and more, I notice this really weird revving problem when upshifting. It doesn't seem to be related to how hard I am on the throttle prior to upshifting either. For some reason, when the clutch goes in- even though my foot is clearly off the gas, I get this mysterious 1-2k extra rev just after going in. Its like the computer just "blips" the throttle or something.

This doesn't happen from stop to 1st. Only 2nd up. The effect is basically like gas>off gas>clutch>weird rev>in gear. It sounds just like somebody who is learning standard and is mistakenly tapping the gas. In fact, its so close to that behavior that I made absolutely sure I was not touching the gas accidently.

This seems to point to something I've been noticing as well- that the throttle reaction time is very sluggish sometimes- and unpredictable.

Anybody know what the heck is going on here? There could be serious implications for reving the engine and clutch wear!

Thanks.

Mine is the 2.3L and it doesn't do that at all. Don't worry about revving the engine, small-displacement Japanese engines are usually built undersquare, which allows them to rev freely and without consequence. Clutch wear might increase, though. You might be shifting too early. The engine might be bogging down, then when you put the clutch in, the fuel that wasn't getting used because of the bog gets burned up and causes an RPM blip. Just a theory. Could be talking out my ass.

Hmmm, sounds logical to me- I guess thats the mark of good b.s? :-) haha . I'll try delaying a little bit and see what happens. Thx--
