Just starting to mod
 

Hey guys, I have an '06 3s 5-door and am looking into some sensible (if there is such a thing) modifcations. This is the first car I've owned that really deserves to have something done, so I don't want to shy away. The first thing on my priority list is a cold air intake. Should I go with the MazdaSpeed (for warranty purposes) and what type of differences should I expect to notice? Also on the list is a short throw shifter and the sport spring kit. Sensible?

If you're concerned about keeping your warranty, then I woud stay away from any and all modifications to the engine. Some dealerships will refuse to service your vehicle even if something as simply as a Cold Air Intake is installed.

That's true, maybe if they are aftermarket parts, and were installed by someone other than themselves. I know that when we install a Mazdaspeed cold air intake, or mazdaspeed exhaust, or whatever, it does not void the warranty of the vehicle.

I think a short shifter with a spring drop and a cold air intake is a good start. You get the nice aggresive lowered stance, an added bit of performance, and a better feel of the shifter. While at the same time being quiet, which can be nice at times.

Usually, for performance, most people start with a cold air intake, and exhaust. I would recommend the Mazdaspeed intake and exhaust, I have installed them and they are always a perfect fit. The performance differences (don't know the dyno numbers) are noticeable. Especially on the RX-8! :)

I went to my Mazda dealer today and they did confirm that provided I went with the MazdaSpeed intake, that I wouldn't void the warranty at all. So what kinds of performance differences can I expect?

not much but some...I'd expect about 7-8whp over stock.

I buy the mazdaspeed stuff, not for the warranty but rather the namebrand and fitment.

Not sure if it's 7-8 or not, has anyone actually done a dyno before and after? If that's true, that's a pretty good gain from a CAI. Of course, you also benefit from better gas mileage provided you are not flooring it everywhere cause it sounds so cool!
