Breathing and rowing

I'm getting started kinda early so I hope this is okay. I'm probably a few months away from buying a new car and I've narrowed it down to just a few models. The 3 is way up on my list. I saw a Copper Red Mica 5-door at the New Car Show earlier this year and I was smitten.

So here's my question. Anyone have any experience with exhaust mods and/or short-throw shift kit? I've always been a little sketchy about going in and tinkering with motors that seem, these days, to be so highly engineered so the most logical modifications seem to be those that let the engine breath/exhaust better.

I also see that there's a shift kit from MazdaSpeed. It looks pretty expensive but if anyone has experience (good or bad) I'd like to hear it.

Thanks in advance.

I take it you want to get a manual then? Short throw kits are pretty easy to install.

I don't know a whole lot about the 3, but on the 6 and RX-8, the exhaust is pretty well engineered, so I would imagine it would be a pretty good system off the bat. A good cold air intake would be the first thing you get to help it breath easy.

the thing to be cautious with on a cold air intake is the MAF sensor, they are sensitive and often reinstalled backwards! this can cause poor engine operation. be sure to check my site or shoot me some questions, we're doing alot for the 3 and more is coming!
