Update On Skyactiv

Well, I now have 2200 miles on my 2012 and am completely satisfied. It has used 1/4 quart of oil, and is averaging 38.5 mpg per calculator ( onboard computer says 38.7 ), and no problems to report. I plan on changing the oil at 3K with synthetic and it looks like a pain to do with the full underbelly cover, and the dealers don't have the filters for it in stock yet ( found one # PE01-14-302). This car really handles great!.

Thanks for the update. I am really getting anxious for ours to come in (it will probably be around Christmas time). Is it typical to go through a 1/4 qt of oil in 2,000 miles? What weight oil does the new Skyactiv engine take?

Yes, all engines use some oil and 1/4 quart in 2200 miles is about perfect. The weight to use in this engine is 0w-20 for fuel economy. I noticed that in other countries 5w-20 is preferred. It must have something to do with EPA ratings. You will love the car. The dealer I bought it from was very interested in my gas mileage as they have yet to hear any feedback. I bought their first Sky-g 3. I just refilled today and went 468 on 12.02 gallons. 38.935 MPG!! I live in the Denver area and here the regular gas is 85 octane. With a 12 to 1 compression motor, I feel safer using midgrade 87. The experts say that at this altitude 85 is actually safer than 87 at sea level (which Mazda recommends) and OK to use, but I'm spending so much less on fuel now why not splurge alittle!. I traded in my 2010 Silverado 2500HD 4x4 gas pig for the 3. I'm feeling much better about driving now. It's fun again.

I think my wife will absolutely love the car (it will be her daily driver). If you could let me know how the stock Bridgestone tires handle snow I would greatly appreciate it. I'm assuming you will be encountering snow. I have my eye on the up coming Mazda CX-5 for my next car (fingers crossed on the Skyactiv Diesel engine).

The stock Bridgestone Turanza EL400's have not gotten good reviews and I'm not expecting much from them. I haven't had any snow experience yet. They seem to be quiet, smooth, and grip well around fast corners. I'll hopefully see 25-30K out of them and then I'll try some Michelin MXV4's. I'll keep you posted on wear.

You may want to check out the ExtremeContact DWS from Continental. They are rated right up there with the MXV4 but are a little cheaper and have higher W speed rating (not that you'll ever be reaching those speeds). Here is a link to them on Tire Rack:

I have a 2 friends that swear by these tires, one drives a 2002 Ford Focus ZX3 3 dr and the other a 2012 Ford Focus Titanium 5 dr.

I just bought a 2012 Mazda3 SkyActiv tonight. Great to see someone already posting about such mileage, and my dealer also very much asked me to update them on what kind of miles I get from it, as they say they've sold 4-6 already but only 1-2 of those they know to have stayed in the area.
