tectonics shifting

i just got an 07 m3s 5-door and iv been playing around with the whole manual shifting feature it has. but iv never drivin a real manual yet because im only 17 and havent had a car to practice on yet. but i would really apreciate some "do's and dont's" on what will mess up my engine and stuff like that. alot of you guys seem to have the standard m3's but anything helps.

and also, would it be a waist of money to put performance parts in my m3 sense its an auto?

you won't mess up your shifter or tranny playing around with the tip-shift. lol, that's what it's there for! :D

If I were you, I'd get some suspension stuff...Maybe a set of Eibachs and a rear swaybar.. :)

icspots September-23rd-2006 04:21 PM

The tranny should be set up to keep you from being able to downshift into too low a gear depending on your speed. i.e.- you can't shift into second at highway speeds.

I've only driven one manumatic car, and was pretty disappointed in how it worked. I'm a diehard MTX person though, so don't take that personnaly.

Have fun, and enjoy your car......... and learn to drive stick as soon as you can. ;)

I guess he meant "tip-tronic"

bwahahaha !

Tsquad September-26th-2006 07:16 PM

well i was told thats what it was called lol, im not sure if thats right or not, guess not.

Roddimus Prime September-26th-2006 07:23 PM

the fastest 4cyl I've ever owned was an automatic. Mods aren't "useless" but more expensive.

Tsquad September-27th-2006 08:50 PM

howmuch would a turbo set me back :\

Roddimus Prime September-27th-2006 10:13 PM

hiboost is your friend....and to get hiboost you should contact Ken @ protegegarage.com

The going rate is just shy of 4K, plus install and tuning.

Roddimus Prime September-28th-2006 09:49 PM

wow, you thought a quality turbo kit would be $1K?? I suggest you take everything REAL slow from now on until you get a little more knowledge behind you.

Tsquad September-28th-2006 11:25 PM

it's cool dude. We all have to start learning somewhere. Fortunatly for you you found a nice place to get your fundamentals.

turbo's are pricey...IF DONE CORRECTLY.

Juan @ Hiboost does them correctly.

Yes, adding a turbocharger will most definitly void your engine warranty. It's a very drastic and visible modification. There are few things that could get your engine warrenty voided faster.

You're looking at the individual turbocharger section. That's fine if you know what you're doing and can do a lot of custom fabrication and install work yourself, but honestly that doesn't sound like the category you're in. You should be looking at the turbo kits:
http://www.hiboost.com/KITMAZDA3.htm

That's the package that goes for around 4K. The kits include new fuel injectors, all the piping and hardware to hook the turbocharger up, a fuel management system, an intercooler so you don't melt the system, and basically everything you need to hook the system up and make it work without blowing up your engine or the turbocharger. If all of that sounds like greek, you've got some more research to do.

If you just got the car, get used to it first. Learn what it can and cannot do before doing something as drastic as adding a turbocharger. Trying to do something that major without knowing how it works or what it will do is a sure-fire way to blow up your new car.

ty for the tips, i was told by the dealership when i got my car that i can buy parts at there on-site shop that wont void my warente such as turbo's. now my best guess is that there about 500-1k more for the same thing just because its "mazda authorized/sold".

now i have another question, would it be wiser to add performance parts like chargers to a manual version, im pretty sure it is, but im not sure why. explanation would be great, im just tryin to learn the basics here.

Roddimus Prime October-4th-2006 06:53 AM

manuals typically accept forced infuction easier since it should really require a clutch change. Automatics typically have to be completely rebuilt and upgraded to handle the extra power. Now in some circles the automatics are such common performance upgrades they are almost cheaper than a good clutch. My automatic (C4 with a shiftkit) in the turbo pinto was only $800+shipping. It dropped almost a second off my 1/4mile time.

If someone made a performance automatic for the protege/3 I would buy it....but sadly they dont.

Tsquad October-5th-2006 11:05 PM

so the answer is because its rougher on an automatic than a manual to have all the performance parts?

vodkax October-30th-2006 02:35 PM

as Tsquad, i also bought a tiptronic 07 Mazda3. i was just a bit skeptical of modding my mazda. i didnt think it would be possible since most modded cars are standard cars would be. i guess we all learn from researching. didnt think i could mod my car since mine was tiptronic. i guess it can be, but it will run me a little more than standard cars.

if anyone could help me cuz i want to get a new exhaust system and cool air intake for my 07 mazda3. i already found that turbocharger, so thank you for that. if any other mods that others could help me out with, i apperciate it.

sorry for being a bother. =) :bt:
