Is the new Mazda3 governd???
 

Did the put a governer on the new Mazda3's or is it still jus a rev limiter like our MP5's????

I sell Mazdas and according to Mazda the 3 is governed at 118 mph

(shiver)!! 118mph!! Brother count me out!! Holy crap! I could understand 118mph being your top speed if you could run a quartermile in 12s, but that is horrible. Given, I'm not advocating excessive speeding on public roads, but that is horrible!!

How often is the 118 mph governor going to get in the way of your enjoying the car?

I understand the MS Protege is also goverened at 130, and it ships with Z rated tires.

Odds are most sane folks are not going to have too many opportunities to bump against the governor in the 3, in fact I will bet 99.99% of owners will never even get closed to it.

I am sure if the car is succesful, an aftermarket will likely be available to reflash the ecu and would likely eliminate it.

The 3 being governed will have virtually no impact on sales, and even less on most owner's satisfaction of the car.

ok heres the story first hand i just purchased a 3 4door S pkg. and my friend did last month, its not goverend at 118 if this is good news to you, hope you happy!
Heres the bad news it has a fuel cut out at 120 ha 2 mph more? o well what helicopter do you want to out run mr gone in 60 sec???

Here's my thoughts if anyone cares....let's not bash this M3 because of the cut off point be it governed or fuel cut off. Let's praise it for the flat handling and spirited driving it is capable of in the real world where we all are living with this car.

The streets are not the place for the super high performance vehicles that technology can produce these days. There are many tracks that hold car club fundays all around the country, I know I'm heading to my local track this summer with my M3 hatch this summer and grin from ear to ear with the little Mazda on rails through a big sweeper.

but the newer 01+ 3rd gens (FS engines) do not have a governor.

and yeah hmmm long story short, i've hit the 118mph (~190kmph) governor a few times in my '99 protege it feels liek the engine just cuts off for about 5 seconds, unitl the speed goes down to about 180kmph, and then it cuts back in, well i havent hit it in over a year so details a little vague to me!!! but basically thats what happened

Well I can confirm the shutoff is at 118. Some open highway in the dessert is a perfect place to find that answer. Is there any way to stop or remove the governer? It is going to suck having it kick it if I go to the track.

So far i don't know of any, except maybe getting a full standalone ECU. otherwise i haven't heard of a chip or anything to take the governor out.... well this is for my 99 protege (the FP-DE engine, 1.8L)... unless something happened within the last year (about the time i haven't been on the boards (been goign to the RX-7 boards alot more)... but something mighta happened, like a chip or something in the last year.

The reason i don't think anything has happened, is because of this
1.6L = no governor - doesn't really have alotta power to reach too high of speeds
1.8L = has governor - has enough power to reach the governor and etc etc.
2.0L = no governor - I geuss for some reason mazda took the governor out.

now i'm geussing most people have the 2.0L (FS-DE) engine. Because of this there is no governor, so the people who actually do take it to the track, do not hit any governor if they reach higher speeds. So there was no reason to make a chip. even though us FP-DE's (1.8L) are said to dyno almost the exact same, (~a few whp) and run exactly even in a race (i've beat all 2.0L's that i've come across, but my day of losing will come), there wasn't enough of us 1.8Ls around for a company to develop a chip for the governor, because most parts available were for the 2.0L and companies were focusing on that engine, which was not governed

So it might take some time for a governor to get released, but if all the 3's have the governors, and they see a large aftermarket available, then there will be someone out there to develop one. It just might take some time cause mazdas programming is hard to crack i've heard.

well take the stuff i said with a grain of salt, it might not be all true, except for the governors in our gen 3 proteges, lol. I'm just talking from what i happen to know

i have a 3 5 door with cat back exhaust and k&n filter and have been past 118 many times...... dont know how far past it will go because i always run out of road but have had it to 123-4

maybe its the same thing as the 3rd gens

maybe one engine type is governed, and another is not

so will there be a huge debate on this, just liek in the 3rd gen section :p

well we need more info to find out properly, and to make sure...

but everyone dunt go out and start trying to find the top speed in traffic and all that, dont be stupid, keep it safe!!! actually i say dunt do it at all, we dunt want wrecked 3s all about now, just because so and so lost control while trying to top it out
