Mazdaspeed 3 Recall Issued

I just dropped my MS3 off at the dealership because I was hearing a clunking sound under the rear of the vehicle when I went over bumps. He showed me a Recall notice for the MS3 related to the 4th engine mount bolt coming loose, and causing the transmission and driveshaft to possible lose alignment. it was issued on July 2nd.

My car only has 2K miles, so this is something that can happen rather quickly (if it is indeed the problem). I'll know more on Monday.

I know there is another thread related to the issue of the engine mounts, but I wanted to create a separate one just to get the word out on the recall.

Got my car back today - they performed the recall, which was a replacement bolt for engine mount #4, but that wasn't the source of my rattling rear end. Apparently there were a couple of bolts on the rear of the subframe that weren't torqued to spec.

Unfortunately, I'm now hearing a less disturbing rattle in the driver's side hatch area where the jack goes (this is without the jack installed). I wonder if they pulled off that side panel to look for the noise, and maybe something got loose in the process.

does this apply to the non mazda speed 3 as well?

Khoney July-10th-2007 06:50 PM

No - only the 'Speed versions. The problem arose because of the increase torque produced by the MS3's turbo.

well that stinks...are there anymore known problems with the speed3 other than that? I was thinking of getting one soon?!!?:squint:

also, have they fixed it on the ones that haven't been sold yet?

I bought my MS3 last month then seen this post. So I called the dealer and they informed me that they had replaced the #4 mount bolt when there cars came off the truck. That being the case you should probably call the dealer and ask if its been changed before worrying about it failing on you.

oh that's cool then i guess. but i was at another Mazda site and they had a lot of other problems occurring like rattling and other parts of the car loose as well. not very reassuring to me when i wanna get one. still thinking about it though.

I just called the dealer about it. Service manager seemed unsure about it, but looked it up on the Mazda web site somewhere and said "bring it on in, and we'll give you a car to drive for the day". Sounds easy to me.

By the way, If my experience with the MS3 means anything, it's unlikely you have much to worry about. 25,000 miles; Zero problems.

If they actually did it, there should be a campaign label on the hood or bulkhead saying "4607F CLOSED". If there isn't, I'd get back with your dealer, because they either didn't do it, or didn't do it properly. The recall wasn't even issued until July2, so either they're BS'ing you or you have a very informed dealer who already had the replacement parts in hand. Based on my experience with Mazda dealerships, those are very rare.

BTW, the direct link to the document describing the repair procedure is here:

I had a helluva time tryin to get the local mazda dealership to do mine...had to make phone calls to Mazda before they would agree to do it, even though it says right there in the letter that regular mazda dealerships can do it. I brought in the dealer letter and step by step instructions with pictures...and they still tried to get me to take it somewhere else. I think they're just lazy. The parts are on order, hopefully they'll come in soon and I'll be able to hit the track to get some practice with launches and get some base 1/8 numbers before I start any mods...
