Help needed with keyless remote programming

I need some help with my new Mazda 3s hatchback (2004). Due to problems at the dealership, they sent me the remote a few weeks after my purchase and the directions for programming a protege. I've followed the directions and it has not worked....can anyone please tell me what I am doing wrong? Are the directions different for the Mazda 3s Model?

These are the directions I've gotten:
With the driver door open, turn the key from lock to on three times quickly.
Then (beginning with the door open) close and open the driver door 3 times.
Then push the "lock" button twice, remove the key
and then the door lock cycles twice, but the remote does not respond.

What am I doing wrong? Thanks so much for your help!

1. Open Driver side door and leave open.
2. Lock and Unlock the drivers door using the power lock door switch on the door
3. Insert key into the ignition.
4.Turn key to ON position and return to Lock (off) position. Do this 3 times within 10 seconds. LEAVE key in the ignition in Lock (off) position.
5. Close and open drivers door 3 times. Leave door open after this step.
6. Car should respond by locking and unlocking the doors once.
7. Press any button on the remote being programmed, twice. Car responds by locking and unlocking the car doors.
8. Additional remotes, repeat step 7.
9. Remove key from ignition and the car will respond once more with about 4 locking and unlockings of the doors. Then you're DONE.

I haven't tried it on a 2000 mazda, but if it has the chip in the key, then probably.

I was looking for replacement keyless entry remotes not too long ago and I found a site that had them for $29.99 for my 04 Mazda 3.

I had them delivered in less than a week and the programming instructions only took maybe 10 seconds?

Anyways, here's a link to the site:

Just click the Mazda category, or type your model in their search box.
