hitch installed

Just got a hidden hitch on my 5 door. Great fit and when the reciever is not in, you cannot even see the hitch. Perfect for towing my utility trailer. Anyone else done any towing with their three?

sounds nice. my 3 isnt really set up for towing anything...

how does it handle the extra load in the rear?

Towing in Manual

I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the manual for my new 3 says specifically not to tow anything. Not that we need to do everything the manual says, though.

you are right, the manual does say that, but just about every car out there can tow 500lbs without a problem. One needs to just be a little careful when speeding up and slowing down. With a tongue weight around 50lbs it tows nicely. Also the hitch works great for bike racks mounted from it.

I just looked up the specs from a new S40 Volvo, which happens to ride on the same chassis as the 3 (please correct me if I am wrong). The volvo is able to tow 2000lbs. It would seem that mazda would rather state no towing then to place a low limit on it all together. Using a 5 spd manual helps and the 3's brakes are certainly up to the task of it as well.

The only thing I would say about the s40 comparison is that the different motor (inline 5) and tranny may hold up better for heavier loads, especially in hilly areas. I agree though, low weights shouldn't be a problem for the 3. Also, I hadn't considered the bike rack idea, good thinking.

well I figure two kayaks plus trailer around 500lbs total. Coastal region of South Carolina is flat as a board so I think I will be OK. The trailer hitch racks are the way if you do not want a roof rack. Stable clean and secure.
