CD Changer failures / headaches

Hi, new poster here, I really hope someone can help with this issue.

I bought a 2008 mazda3 new. For the last couple of years the CD changer has been sort of flaky, occasionally it would say "check CD" and spit out an existing CD when I was trying to load a new CD in or even eject an existing CD. I never did anything about it as it was intermittent / impossible to reproduce on demand, and it wasn't that serious of a problem.

Last sunday it totally crapped out, it's stuck on "check CD" and it goes into a loop where it whirs for a while trying to eject the disc, then says "check CD", then tries to eject the disc again, etc. I have 5 CDs stuck in there and can't play any of them or change a CD, the CD player is useless. It's stuck in a loop trying to play or eject CD1.

Googling reveals this to be a relatively common problem. It seems that other forum answers involved resetting the CD Player / radio system. I'm not sure if something is actually physically wrong with the changer versus it just going into some weird messed up state that would be resolved with a reset.

One person posted a reset code that said to hold down the power button and then to press both the FM/AM and Clock buttons simultaneously for 2 seconds. I tried this with no luck, I must have spent at least an hour starting and stopping the car, fooling around with the buttons pressing every possible combination every way, etc.

A bunch of other people said they just disconnected the battery to reset the CD changer. Today I disconnected the battery (actually I just disconnected the positive terminal for a few minutes), reconnected it, and started the car. The radio stations were definitely reset. However, somehow the clock was NOT reset and the CD player seemed to instantly remember the "CD in" state that it was previously stuck in, it didn't even whir or make any noises, it just knew that it was in that state.

I am totally out of ideas now. Anyone know how I can at least reset the state of the CD player so it will at least try to function normally. Or anyone have any other ideas? Bringing it into the dealer is the last resort and I know they will probably end up charging me a ton of money just to put in the CD reset code or charge a ridiculous amount for a new CD changer.

Thanks in advance for any help!

CD changer

I'm having the same problems with my 2007 Mazda3 6-disc changer -- the Check CD light keeps coming on, and I haven't used the CD player much because it has been temperamental. I bought the car new in Oct. 2006.

Could the fact that I haven't been using it much be the reason why it's not working now? Could it be dusty?

Sadly in dash CD changers are notorious for getting stuck like this. The problem is mechanical, so no reset is going to get it working again. Your options are pretty much to disassemble the stereo to remove the CD's and see if it works again after reassembling it. Alternately you could just find a replacement stereo online and install that. You'd still need to take apart the old one to get your CD's out.

A new stereo runs $400-500 from the dealer, however you can generally find used HU's for $25-100.... sometimes even for free from people who wish to clear out closet space.

same here

actually it happened to me also but at that time there was only one cd in the dash so it was saying that check cd and was trying trice every time to unload the cd , then what i did like a tried for 3-4 times and then waited for 5 mins turned off the car i.e mazda 3 2007, then took another c.d and when i clicked eject the cd player starts taking load like tried to eject the c.d at the same time i just put the other cd into the cd player and when cd player tried to catch my cd i just pulled that out and with that the previously inserted cd was out of the dash and since that it has never done anything like that , it only happened once ,
...............
without clicking eject try inserting any other cd , u'll feel like the machine will be tying to catch that cd, hope it will work
what i think is it happened because many c.d's have paper pasted on it ant there is very narrow and sensitive machinery inside there and this c.d get stucked due to raising of that paper from outer edges restricting its pat, so after the issue is solved , try inserting any c.d after removing that page !!
sorry for my english :(
thnx

check cd on Mazda 5

I am unable to load a new cd into my changer. There are NO cds currently in the player. I press Load, the display shows 'check cd' and that is as far as I get. There is no whiring noise like anything is moving. I did hit reject just for the heck of it and same message. The manual says this error means something is wrong with the cd, however, I can't even get that far since it won't load. What can I try? Any help appreciated!
