a/c compressor issue

Has anyone had problems with their A/C in a 2007 mazda3s? Two weeks ago my a/c quit and I had it looked at, apparently my compressor locked up internally? Grant it I live in S. Fl but for it to fail after 2 1/2 years has me thinking. My previous truck that I had for 5 years never had an a/c issue. Also I have exceeded my miles on my warranty so they want to charge me 1500 dollars for it. Has anyone done a DIY? Basically is there any way I can get it fixed for less than 1500?

:Wconfused

Same here my mazda3 2007 s, took it to the dealer, they wanted to charge me $90 just for the check.. took it to pep boys (only 40) and tehy told me is the compresor that is leaking... replacing it will cost around $700.00 damn!!! only 43,000 miles...

yea the dealer charged me 50 and checked everything for 3hrs, when I told them I only need them to check the a/c so I can possibly get goodwill assistance from mazda corporate. They also told me about my belts, cabin filter (i'm a non smoker), tires etc. And then had the audasity to ask if I want any of those taken care of today. And oh the a/c is locked up and will cost $1200.

So pepboys said $700...the part alone is that much...I may have to call them up if they are around here as well.

it may not be leaking from the compressor, I have found that there's pressure under the caps used to cover the high & low pressure fill / check valves. Meaning they use crappy valves that will bleed the system down over the years.

Is it safe to purchase a remanufactured compressor? Pep boys quoted 249.99 from everdrive

There shouldn't be any issue with a reman compressor. I haven't had to replace one, so i'm not sure on the brands... but make sure there's a decent warranty. Like since yours lasted under 2 years, make sure there's a year or two warranty on it - could save you the next time it dies.
Also make sure it was just the compressor, and not something like the AC cooler was obstructed so the whole system overheated... something that would kill the new compressor as well.
