New to forum first post so take it easy if I'm in the wrong place.

So I have a new skyactive 3 Hatchback , bought it with 8 miles on it. I'm not getting the MPG that the dealer said I would be getting so I wonder if it's just me or what.
I do mostly city driving but I do have a few 6-8 mile stretches in my commute to work and my average MPG is about 24-26. I'm 35 and drive sensible.
The dealer assured me I would get 38 in the city like his mom that bought the exact same car (she never goes on the interstate.)
I've brought it back to them to check out but they couldn't find anything when they used the computer to check logs.

I came from a 2008 Mazda 6 and bought this car mainly for the MPG promises so I'd really like to see if anyone else is getting these MPG figures. Seems like everyone else is getting in the 30's or better.
So frustrating!!

I've ran regular 10% ethanol and straight no ethanol gas but still getting about 360 miles per tank. I've got a little over 1K miles on it now so I wouldn't think it's a breaking in issue.

I bought a 2012 Skyactive 6 speed in Portland, OR a week ago. It is the sedan which is rated 1 mpg better than the hatch but one mpg worse than the automatic. I just got back from the 2285 mile drive from Spokane, WA to Fairbanks, AK. My mileage, brimful tank to brimful, calculated manually for 2285 miles was 40.55. The trip was 95% rural with speeds mostly 60-72 mph with most at the high end of the range. The trip computer was about 5% optimistic and showed 42.2 for the trip. This easily beats the epa numbers.

If you want good city mileage, keep your foot out of it. If it is a manual, shift at below 2500 rpm and if an automatic push the throttle like you have a raw egg between your foot and the throttle.

You have a choice, hot rod it and get lousy mileage or baby it like an 80 year old and smile at the gas pump.

38 mpg seems a bit high for mixed driving with more city than hwy. My guess is 38 mpg is the hwy est.

I am averaging 24.6 in mixed driving (mostly suburbia w/occasional hwy). I do not have the skyactiv though, mine is the 2.5L w/automatic trans.

Thanks for the replies. I'm starting to think the salesmen just said that just so I'd buy the car since I was on the fence for a hybrid.
Btw im in Baton Rouge Louisiana feathering the pedal to get the most mileage. Keep any replies coming.

I've had my 2012 Mazda3 Sport GS-SKY Manual for less than a week and according to the numbers I've plugged into an online fuel converter, I am getting 47.0800 miles per Imperial gallon (mixed city/highway)

I just bought a Mazda 3 with Skyactiv this week.. the window sticker said 28 city and 40 highway. I don't see any way you'll get 38 in the city if you're driving normally.. maybe if you hypermile like crazy.

I have beat 40 on the highway with careful driving though..

We'll see how the averages play out.. but I think you'd have to drive crazy conservative in order to get 38 in city driving.

City spec is 27/28 mpg stick/auto
 

It seems like you are getting much less mpg than you should. We have the older mazda3 2.3 hatch and a 5 speed auto and average 26.8 mpg.

I probably wouldn't believe what any car salesperson ever tells me.

Having said that, I bought my 2012 Mazda 3 Touring (6-speed) last weekend and I'm averaging 35mpg on mostly highway driving (majority through the canyon). So far the car is a good balance of economy and sportiness.

Some other cars that I looked at was a Prius C ($4K more and I was concerned about the power) and Ford Focus/Fiesta (much more expensive).

I'm very happy with my Mazda3 so far.

Hi, my first post here. I bought my Mazda3 Skyactiv Sedan 6-speed manual a month ago and I already put 2000 miles on it.

The first 1500 miles were with 87 octane gasoline. The trip computer said my average was 39.6 mpg. For the last 500 miles I switched to 91 octane and now the trip computer says my average is 41.4 mpg. I am using Costco fuel. When I fill up, I do my own math and I always come up with about what the trip computer is reporting. This is with about 30% city driving and 70% highway.

With this fuel economy, I don't care about hybrids. Besides, the Mazda3 rides much better than any hybrid, this was the primary reason I went with the Mazda 3.

My driving style is mix, I coast whenever is possible. I try to avoid the break pedal as much as possible. If I want to slow down, I just get my foot off the gas pedal. However, this doesn't mean I don't punch it every now and then when I need to pass other cars.

My daughter is getting 37 mixed with her 05 2.0 5 spd. with 120k on it. Pretty impressive.

To the OP, the car's new, the first couple hundred miles are considered "break in" miles before the car is suppose to get close to what the marked MPG is. Even then it wont be perfect. But you should see progress in mileage as soon as you drive a few tanks of gas on the car.

I have a Mazda 3 Sport Sky and have not yet filled the tank since delivery two weeks ago. I have 250 miles (400 km ) on her and the gauge is at one notch below half full. I drive in a rural area, mostly short trips to a larger town. I won't know for another few days what the first tank mileage will be.

That said, on another forum up here in Canada, the recommendation is to wait until the first oil change after delivery to really gauge the efficiency. This allows for engine break-in and clean oil after that.

You are also doing a lot of short hauls with stopping and starting frequently, so perhaps the worst conditions for fuel economy.

This other forum also stresses to avoid quick starts from stops and exceeding speed limits. In other words, your driving style can have a great effect on fuel economy.

If after that you are not getting better fuel economy, I would press the dealership for an answer.

Well just traded in my vintage 2002 chevy P.O.S. (cavalier) for my new 2012 Mazdz 3 with Skyactive. So far i've put a woping 270 km on the car. So far i'm petty happy with the car. The milage seems to be great so far but we will start see how she does after the first oil change.

Now I am wondering what to get, coming from an Saab 9-2x (stepchild of a Subaru).

I came across an 2012 Mazda 3 i touring with skydrive and a 2010 Mazda 3 s Grand Touring, mpg > luxury?

So far I saw with sky drive you will get average: 32 to 35mpg?
Without Skydrive: 26mpg?

Is this correct? And yes this is my first post here.

I recently purchased a 2012 Mazda3 Skyactive sedan. My mixed mileage so far is 27.3 mpg - I do about 80% local driving and the rest is highway. I feel that this is atisfactory - I'll get a better idea when I drive to my sister's home in Florida - about 950 miles.
