2006 Mazda 3s clutch.
 

When I went to clutch today for some reason the clutch pedal got stuck and I poped it out with my hand but then it wouldn't go into gear unless I shut the car off then threw it in 1st and then started the car but it didn't feel right so I started to drive home but while I was going down the street i went to hit the gas and it wasn't in gear and wouldn't catch in any gears so I had it towed to pep boys and they said my clutch needs to be replaced and it'll cost me 940$.

The thing is that there was no slipping or grinding before this so could it be something else or is it definitely the clutch?

I know this is a late reply and I'm not supper mechanically inclined but sounds to me like a pressure plate/ throw out bearing issue
