Cross threaded Wheel Stud - Need some tech guidance.

So, i have a cross threaded stud and I want to replace it myself. From what I understand I have to remove the hub and tap out the old stud and tap in a new stud. I also hear that if you remove the axle bolt that you need to buy a new one because it can only be used once. My questions are has any one else done this work before on their 3? If so was the axle bolt crazy hard to remove? Does anyone know what the tourque spec should be putting the axle bolt back on? Is there a way to remove the stud without having to remove the hub? This is the on the front of the car BTW.

thanks in advance

Yes the axle bolt is one time only. It isn't hard to remove but is a giant nut. It also probably has a dented part on it that helps it lock in place, which is part (or all) of the reason that it must be replaced.

I'm sure someone else can chime in on the proper torque spec.

don't remeber the torque specs either...i know it's something crazy like 225 lb-ft or something...you WILL need an impact wrench to remove it...it's next to impossible to lock that wheel down hard enough to get the nut loose with the brakes, and I don't like the idea of pushing on the tranny that hard....

I got mine off with hand tools ( a very long breaker bar) but yeah it didn't feel good doing it. My impact wrench couldn't get it off.

How did you tourque on the new axle bolt after? Did you use hand tools or your impact gun?

well it can supposedly do 250 ft*lbs but I couldn't even get it to get the crank pulley bolt off. Had to do that by hand as well.

Have another person push on the brake pedal while you're using the impact on the axle nut, that'll keep the impact pressure from transferring to the tranny. Of course, do that before removing the caliper;0!

fat lot of good that will do with someone twisting on it with a breaker bar, which is what i was referring to...

I've done this before...I'm not guessing...but thanks for the tip, I'm sure it might help some others...
