Awesome!
When I was a grad student at Utah, the University team (basically a project for the juniors only, IIRC) would take their car out to practice and run it through it spaces on the parking lot behind the engineering building. I've stood around and watched and chatted with the guys a couple of times. I'll try to hunt down a photo a friend took of this SAE car (bright red of course!) going through a cone course in the parking lot with the sun setting over the Great Salt Lake in the background. I think it was for the college newspaper or something!
Anyway - that thing could run circles round almost anything on wheels! I'm jealous that you guys actually get to work on these :) OK - I hunted down a publicity picture of the 1999 car - it seems they've stopped using red from 2K onwards :( http://www.mech.utah.edu/fsae/1999/p...s/team&car.jpg |
those things look fun as hell. our school did the dune buggy thing instead. while i *was* a member of SAE in school, i didn't have the expertise to participate in the project.

I've actually taken the P5 out to two autocross events since I bought it last July. I couldn't drive it too much b/c I had to help out with the events/car for Cal Poly. I still got to take it on some runs though.
Don't worry, I'll be gettin on the program :D |
NCSU Team
Check out my school's team- North Carolina State University. I helped a little here and there, but never could commit to the time the real designers and engineers put in. The latest car is seriously cool!! This is also a good example of what happens when you throw some Industrial Designers in the mix with Engineers :) (no really, I'm not partial to industrial design! :)
Since FSEA- these guys have gone on to work for Crawford (LMP cars), Ford, Nissan, etc. If that shows you what you can learn from a program like this. check em out- www.wolfpackmotorsports.com |
Jason, you're missing these guys tearing up the autocross courses this year. They didn't do so well in the beginning, but are really getting to know the car now!
There are some good NCSU vs Duke, competitions. If you could call it that, as the NCSU team usually way outdrives the Duke team. |
Here at Northern Illinois University we also compete in SAE Formula and Mini Baja. We are working on our third car this year. Good times.
