Matty P on PINKS??
Some of you may know I work for GPC now and NAPA is the main sponsor of PINKS on SPEED. PINKS will be filming 9 episodes here at Steele Raceway in october/november. I'm in the process of working with our upper management about some sort of cross-promotional thing where we can advertise NAPA on the show by actually getting a few cars on the track.
Seeing as how this is several months away I'm contemplating buying an old mazda beater and racing another sales manager on the show for "pinks". If I am allowed to do this then I'll be sure to use the appropriate logos and give "props" where deserved! Anyone have any leads on great potential beaters for CHEAP...I mean dirt cheap...like someone want to give me a chasis or something?? protege? mx3, mx6, rx7?? I've got too much in my FC to put it on the line right now. Another FC/FB would be perfect though as I could gut it down to nothing and spray the piss out of it. Not have more than $2k in it. Any ideas? anyone help me? |

found several good candidates in the ATL region...
96 MX6 V6 5spd 88 MX6 GT turbo 90 MX5 gutted race chasis all of these are under $2k. Anything I buy will be gutted down to the bare metal, stripped as clean as it can get and abused as much as it will withstand. anyone interested in starting a fundraiser to help with this? I'm sure I can talk Barry into donating some vinyl. |

well, according to what I've found in my homework it would actually be the slowest of the bunch (stock of course).
96 MX6 = 17.1lbs / hp 88 mx6 = 19.3lbs / hp thats a lot of weight to overcome...not to mention how it would gut down. Tyler, I hope you're mid 12's or so I'm aiming for high 12's with either of these. God forbid if I find another $750 SHO... I'll be in the 11's on spray. |

yeah, the SHO I sold to my buddy came real close to handing my MS6 my own ass on the interstate....and I'm modded.
That 3.0L Yamaha V6 is one of the best engines ever made IMO. Not to mention what happens when you swap the bottom end from the automatic 3.2L SHO's into the MTX car....mmm, extra 25whp-25wtq for less than $200. |

Here's the difference...the 88 stock #'s are proven to be at the wheel..they dyno at 145hp and 190lb-ft of torque at the wheels bone stock the 96 are at the crank... 1st gen MX6 gt's are faster than 2nd gens, PERIOD. |

Mike, I agree...if I were going to do it I'd go turbo anyway....just weld a bigger turbo directly to the manifold, dump it out under the car and gut it beyond belief. low 13's easily.

well....after some discussion with a local MX3 owner I'm leaning more towards finding a 1.8L MX3 and boosting it. The weight difference is 500lbs stock for stock. That's just too hard to beat.

I've been hunting around for used MX3 GS's and they are sweet little rides... 140bhp 1.8L V6 in a 2400lb car is a sweet little combo. From what I've been hearing the little 1.8L is pretty buzzy and holds a fair amount of boost. I'm just thinking about a small T25 turbo and about 8-10psi....should be good for low 200whp and about 35mpg.

2400 lbs in a car that small is odd, esp. considering both 1st and 2nd gen Pros come in at about 60-90 lbs lighter. i wonder if you could gut more from the Proteges cuz they have more seats and insulation than you could an MX3.
i did some craig's list hunting in the atlanta area and found a 93 Protege 5spd for $500, runs fine. here's the link: http://atlanta.craigslist.org/car/281923487.html there's a 93 MX6 V6 5spd for $350 that needs a lot of work...a lot of work, good for a potential parts car, i don't know. your "location" says birmingham, i tried looking there but didn't find anything within about 140 miles and nothing way under $2000 except an 88 RX-7 5spd that needs apex seals for $800. that was an autotrader find. what are your search mediums (local paper, craigs list, auto trader, etc.)? |

I wouldnt go the MX3 route, you'd probably lose unless you install the KL03 or KLZE motor into it. I've driven/worked on the 1.8 V6 models, and they just arent that fast. You'd think it would be in a smaller car, but I was a little dissapointed. I guess maybe I'm just used to driving MSP3's and MSP6's and RX8's and such, maybe just a little spoiled. But if you are gonna be racing on PINKS, I think you should find something with alot more potential, or something that'd be cheaper for you to go fast.

my goal was to drop 500+lbs of weight from the car and spray the shit out of it. I think it would be quick enough.... besides it's like bracket racing,...we'll get to negotiate..
I don't know how likely this is to happen but I'll know early next month. |
