What to do when AC compressor clutch doesn't work?

An AC compressor compresses your car’s refrigerants before sending them to the condenser, other components, and then back into the compressor. With the help of the drive belt and clutch, the AC compressor obtains power from the engine to operate.

The power from the engine to the compressor is engaged by the AC compressor clutch. The clutch is not engaged when the air conditioning system is switched off, so the AC compressor will not run.

When you turn on your air conditioner, the clutch engages and the AC compressor begins to rotate. This is why, after turning on the air conditioner, your engine makes louder noises.

How can you tell whether your compressor clutch is operating properly?

Set the AC settings in your cabin to its maximum levels and examine the AC compressor located underneath the hood and check if your compressor clutch is operating.

When you see your compressor clutch spinning, you know it's working. From time to time, the clutch might cease rotating, which is fine, and the system will not be overridden.

You may also use a multimeter to see if the fuse is functioning or not. Fill your A/C system with the proper level of fluids, including refrigerants and oil.

Look beneath the hood and determine if your compressor clutch is rotating together with the pulley. You may need to use a handheld light to find the clutch because it is normally located in the bottom portion of the engine compartment.
