Wow...thats so sick!!! With all the claimed advantages they should start production on that! Even cooler is that they're like half an hour from where I live!

Coates valve engines have been around for a long time in R&D centers. There are several primary reasons why they never made it into production:
1) If it seals, then friction is high
2) If friction is low, it won't seal
3) Cost... (remember that in the auto industry, a half a cent cost reduction between two similar parts is often enough to drive an engineering change)
I met a guy at the Society of Automotive Engineers congress a couple of years ago who had a Coates valve head design, and told him the above. Without reason, he became furious with me and started on an anti-Japanese rant. But, that's a story for another time.

holy crap. If that were a little more feasible I'd surely get one and play around with it....that might be just the thing my turbo pinto needs....double it's rpms. Hell even something 12K rpms would be insane.

Sometimes that's the problem. When the Mazda3 came out, my fiance and I went to the car lot to check them out. She was asking me questions like, "what's it going to take to put you in one of these?" Man, if she could just arrange financing, I wouldn't even need the darned salespeople!

Modern Formula 1 engines are all normally aspirated, 3.0L V-10's with a maximum of 5 valves/cylinder allowed. They routinely rev to 18,000 RPM.

Also, think very short stroke and big bore. One of the limiting factors in engine design is piston speed. Short stroke means the piston has less distance to travel in a given stroke, hence lower piston speed, hence lower inertia...

i switch cars about every year. The P5 is my favorite though. I've had it a little over 2 years now. To answer the question I only have 5 cars now. I only drive 2 of them though...the others are in various states of build.
