Supercharging and Turbocharging

I have just recently thought of my protege as more than just a rice burning work mobile.

I used to be heavily into the General Motors muscle cars.

Anyway, can you turbocharge and supercharge an engine. This was never a question with my v8 as i would just leave them na with maybe some boring, porting, headers etc...

If anybody can tell how the air intake works when you install a turbo that would be great. As i have said i have never messed with forced induction and was just wondering.

Yeah But how does the air intake system work when you go turbo.

How does fresh air get into the system
I am a turbo newby help me out.

go to www.howstuffworks.com and look up turbos, it is a very good site for people who are just starting out on turbos and for some examples go to www.homemadeturbo.com

thanks for the tips.

If anyone else has some info for a new protege tuner, hit this thread.

Meguire's just did a Turbo/Supercharger mod on there interga. Mkaes around 400 HP at the wheel. Now as for our engine bays being too small I don't know about that. TKT has a eaton roots blower mod for our car as well as a Turbo kit so combine the two adn you have supercharger and turbo.

Why deal with the added complexity when you should be able to get what you want from one or the other?

A well designed turbo system will do this without the supercharger. I'd be extremely happy with a system like the OEM Audi 1.8L turbo. In the most extreme cases, a twin turbo system would still be easier than a turbo supercharger application.

The only reason for a dual charged setup is to overcome turbo lag. Get nice linear power at low rpm and good torque off the supercharger, and then have the turbo take over at higher rpms when it builds boost. In practice it is a pain in the ass to make working though.

Who??

Who is TKT??? I'm sure there are vey good reason for staying away from them, what would those be??

Just asking becuase I've never heard of them, and would like to know why I shouldn't have heard of them (as in becuase they aren't that great)...

Oh wait, are you reffering to Thomas Knight?? In which case disregard...And the only supercharge I've seen was for the Probe V-6...

so how difficult would it be to twin turbo a protege.

chdesign February-5th-2002 01:13 PM

Twin turbo wouldn't be very effective and very very difficult to plumb. You would be better off with a good single turbo setup. Anyways look at most of the upgrades for your twin turbo supra and RX-7 they all go to a single turbo setup. If you want more power from a Protege I suggest selling your pro and getting a 323 hatchback and doing a GTX or GTR conversion on it you would get much better gains for around the same price of upgrading your engine and getting a turbo kit....same reason why I am goign to build up a 90 CRX on the side and drop a J-Spec ZC engine and build it up and turbo it with the car and all i'm looking around 5 grand if I do the work myself.
