dave!, that looks badass!, you siad the turbo was in good condition, but that looks practically new...

protetype June-15th-2002 02:15 PM

ok, dave... that's it... what's your address? what color house? where's the keys? ah, screw that... i don't need the keys... i'll be stealing your car soon ;D no, but seriously, youve asked if we're interested in the 1.6 manifolds.. what about a kit? that shit looks insanely good. i'm definately interested after seeing this. when is it going to be done? what is this guy charging for the manifold or kit (please, a kit? :))

Interested in turboing your 1.6L

They guy manufacturing my manifold is named Andrew Wagner from York, PA. He runs a huge fabrication shop and also runs Wagner Motorsports a Forced Induction specialty race car fabrication shop. He will be launching he web site today hopefully and will have tons of info. Right now we are looking at making manifolds on a one by one basis for the 1.6L Gen3. If and when someone takes him a 2.0 he'll have a jig for the 1.8 and 2.0 Gen3s. By the end of next week Andrew and I well have an idea of how much and what he'll be offering and post it here. So keep checking back on how the project is going.

protetype June-16th-2002 12:32 PM

right on, thanks a lot David. I'll definately be keeping an eye on this thread. That's cool that he's gonna do it on a 1by1 basis. That makes it a lot easier for those of us who can't just fork over a couple grand right away. :) If you're satisfied with the performance of your setup, i'll be giving him a call myself.

btw, is he going to be dyno'ing it for you once installed?

biknman June-16th-2002 12:45 PM

Tunning and dyno

Once Andrew is done installing the turbo, manifold, header, oil lines, intercooler, piping, BOV, fittings for EGT and Boost gauge, TubroXS boost controller, and heat shields I'll be taking it to www.extrememotorsports.com and letting Rob Mckaller dyno and tune it. Don't know exactly how much boost I'll be running at first cause we have not decide on what type of fuel enrichment to run. Rob who engineered the system seems to think a Apexi AFC will handle things fine for a boost range of 3-9psi. I'll keep you posted at this thread on the progression of things.

jaymersh19 June-16th-2002 10:47 PM

That is VERY nice. At this very moment I am drueling (spelling?) all over my keyboard from just looking at your car. I cant wait to see how it turns out. Good luck!

Dave, One thing....what did he make the manifold out of? Cause if its mild steel its going to crack trust me I know from Experience. If its 304 Stainless it will crack you need at elast 321 stainless for a thin wall runner like that. Make sure thats what he is using or you will hear a nice PPPPPSSSSSTTTTT sound in about 2 days of running it.

so that's what you've been up to lately.....

oh man! I can't wait to see that car in action!!!! :bt:

Manifold mateial? The guy manufacturing the manifold has been fabricating turbo systems and parts for about ten years now to include three Dodge Darts he currently owns and runs as daily drivers between him and his brothers with the same 1/2" stainless steel and pipe that he is using on my header and two Intergras that he is also working on right now. Plus there will be several hours of testing and QC work done before I take it out driving around town or racing.

For those with questions or concern about the availability of a kit

This is a project for me by Andrew of Wagner Motorsports and we are not developing kits we are just custom turbo charging my car and if someone else (1.6L GEN3)wants a manifold the jig is available now for others if they want one made. If someone wants a manifold made for 2.0 they need to take the car to Andrew and he'll make it and then there will be a jig for everyone else that wants a manifold for 2.0. If you want a complete system you need to take the car to Andrew and he will install everything but you must do the engineering and decide which turbo you want ic, BOV, etc. If you just want a manifold using the same turbo I used he can make you one. If you can take him the car along with the turbo, IC, BOV, boost controller he can make the manifold, the pipes, run the oil lines, and fit the piping other than that it up to you to tune it an engineer what you want. If you want a complete ready to bolt in kit see Tri-point or Bell and pay $4k. My system comes from half a year of research to find someone reliable to build the manifold as I engineered the system myself and obtained all the parts minus the piping for the manifold, ic, and intake. Which is the cheapest way to do things and that's the reason I'm even doing this project any way is that I enjoy working on my own car. I would have made the manifold myself if I had the equipment to do it but I don't. And as a courtesy to other Protégé owners I and Andrew are offering a manifold. It’s up to you to engineer it and install it or be willing to shell out big bucks for someone else to do it and maintain it.

I'll have pics of the all the piping soon.

NegatiZE June-19th-2002 02:12 AM

WOW. Is this custom!????

dude, david, your car rules all! interior and exterior wise it is the shit! and the engine is just as worthy now too! you have what we all want...

good work, what is next on your long list of mods?

you now deserve the name "protege tuner" atleast i think

Bruce95fmla June-20th-2002 01:58 PM

damn that looks so sick , I can't wait to hear that sucker go .. and the install is really clean and neat , I say you got a good deal with it .. keep us all updated with pics and everything

macdaddyslomo June-20th-2002 06:05 PM

I want one!!!!!!!!!!!!! your fabricator got a price on a manifold and downpipe, and how much did that T25 cost you???....also you really think the Apexi AFC will work...how much boost you gonna run???....got any idea as to estimated output?? I'd REALLY like to get something like that setup in my car

macdaddyslomo June-21st-2002 01:22 PM

how 'bout it biknman????

biknman June-23rd-2002 08:48 AM

Pics of complete system and down pipe

We'll folks its complete except for running the EGT and Boost guages and setting the boost level and BOV. We ran it yesterday with no problems at the factory set boost level from the actuator on the Gareet T25 I got form a Jspec 2nd Gen Eclipse which I think is 11psi. I'll know for sure today when I hook up the boost guage.
System is Custom Stainless Steel manifold with flang for a Garret T25 with bungs for the O2 sensor and EGT guage probe and down pipe with pung for second Os sensor, Turbo is a T25 of an Jspec 2nd gen Eclipse with less than 30K the exhuast hosing was modified so that acutaor could be mounted properly and compressor outlet faced in right direction oil cooled and water cooled with TurboXS standard boost controller, Intercooler from 2nd gen Eclipse sets in bottom of engine bay on driverside behind raditor, Intake to throttle body and IC pipes is steel painted high temp black and then clear coated with high temp paint silcone fittings and TurboXS BOV, Intake pipe to turbo is cut up and rewelded alu. pipe from Injen CAI for 1.6L with MAF sensor and air filter in drviers front fender-well. Autometer Boost, EGT, and Fuel pressure guages mounted in cab in extra din slot.

no cel from the maf censor? that's my big question aside from what 1/4 mile time you get even though i know you're not a dragger, and also what power it's puttin to the wheels now.

azrakain June-23rd-2002 09:09 PM

and an approximate for us 2.0L people.

derrick1623 June-23rd-2002 09:17 PM

for the 2.0...i talked with andrew while i was there with dave, and i'll be starting to buy parts within the month, i'll be doing a write-up similar to daves for the 2.0 install, the manifold, and all that jazz.

biknman June-25th-2002 02:45 PM

Well folks turbo is running need to work out some bugs. I have small oil link in theturbo so I get some blue smoke out the tail pipe. And when I'm at WOT under boost the ECU cuts all the fuel an I'm running lean so the car doesn't want to run all like its being coked to death but i let up on the throttle about a 1mm and it runs fine. I guess i have to work out the fuel managment stuff now so that when I slam the throttle down I get [power all the way thought the rpm range.

FYI the guy the did the custom fribriction work Andrew, has a web site up check it out at www.wagnermotorsports.net

azrakain June-25th-2002 05:32 PM

are you using a FMU like the Vortec 10:1? Also, could Andy make another manifold, like yours, for my car (Protege5 2.0L)?

biknman June-26th-2002 09:57 PM

Friday I'm having the car tunned by http://www.extrememotorsports.com/ and hopefully will have the fuel managment stuff under control and the car dynoed with some numbers for you guys.

This the current problem: http://www.extrememotorsports.com/g2stage/stage6.htm I'm having and hopefully friday it will be fixed and I'll be repppin it up

biknman June-28th-2002 06:21 AM

blue LEDz

From what you have read and I have read its all assumtions. No body in the Protege world has tried to find out if it (AFC) will work. So I'm going to try. Right now the plan is bigger injectors and adj fuel regulator to raise fuel pressure when at boost. I'm letting the Pros at Extreme Motorsports handle this stuff so we'll see what they come up with.

cdglowp5 June-28th-2002 08:33 AM

Biknman,

Do you already have a fuel pump? Let me look in my parts, I may have the fuel pump from the turbo charged 626 (2.0L turbo charged from 1985-88) I may still have the bigger injectors from the Toyota Supra. They will fit.

I was thinking to you can put a fifth injector programed to dump fuel right before WOT.

Did you ever advance your ignition timing by turning the disbuter?
To much advancing on turbo causes WOT but I know you know this already. I would go back to stock degrees.

I did not know I was getting a Protege 5, If I did I would of been turbo and All Wheel Drive. Its the same set up as the Mazdaspeed Protege but it has all wheel drive. I may stop by crazy rays to see if it there.

biknman July-1st-2002 06:39 AM

Update

Got the car into Extreme Friday for some tuning they installed a fuel pressure regulator and bumped up the fuel pressure to 40 psi the car ran great until WOT and then damn fuel cut. We ordered a Vortec 12:1 FMU should be in this week and by next week we'll have it installed and do some more Dyno pulls. FYI with an additional 15 Hp tuned into car with Fuel pressure bumped up at WOT was only making 47 HP ugh! Before turbo was making around 80 hp. I'll keep you guys posted.
