New BEGI kit question

I searched through that big BEGI thread and couldn't find the answer I was looking for. I aplogize if this has already been visited. Anyway, I'm assuming that the existing kit runs off of the stock ECU? Now this is all fine and good if it does, but like the BPT swap and Pro LX ECU, it's hardly ideal. The ECU just isn't designed for a forced induction engine.

Now, BEGI states they are shooting for 210hp (probably crank) for the kit. I'm assuming they could coax quite a bit more HP with just some good tuning with an aftermarket engine management system. Are they just using the stock ECU to keep the cost factor down? I see why they would, I was just wondering if anyone was 1. planning on getting the kit, and 2. using some sort of engine management with it.

They are running the stock ECU. I talked with Corky (I think that's his name) for about twenty minutes about his turbo for the protege. He said that it worked fine in development.

I would just call him for a more detailed explanation. He seemed more than happy to discuss his kit with me.

I'm sure that it's going to work fine with the stock ECU, but I'd assume you could expect more gains from running some sort of engine management.

Thanks for clarifying, I wasn't sure if it was using the stock ecu or not!

The stock ECU is working fine for me but it limits the boost I can run. When engine management is perfected the boost is incresed.

I've seen the videos you have, what boost are you running? I didn't look too hard, around 6-8psi? Do you ever plan on going standalone engine management? I'd be interested to see what kind of gains you could run then :D

Just shy of 8 psi now. I will run a standalone in the future with a few more injectors when the car is ready for increased boost. After a few more cosmetic goodies I will start to beef up the drivetrain. We want to run 15 psi with the final platform. Shooting for 300 hp. I know we will break a few things in the process:rolleyes:

Yea, I've read in a few other threads the drivetrain is going to be the weakpoint. It's kind of frustrating because that's the same problem they had with the 323 GTXs back in the day. Now that I think about it, that's how it is for a lot of newer 4cyl cars, like the Celica for example. I hear they have a pretty weak tranny. Good luck with everything though, it must feel pretty cool to be the first turbo p5 (at leas that we know of)! Congratulations again :)

Hi funkdaddysmack

I know this is an old thread but I just wanted to know if you have still go the pro with the BEGi turbo, if so nows a good time to ask how is the turbo after all this time.

Thanks

i dont think you'll get an answer from him since he posted in a LONG time. I'll say this for the BEGi kit....my friend Ken is using it and has had it for a very long time. I think he's put over 30K miles on it and it's running better than ever.

I am also another owner of the BEGi Kit, and like Ken (Captain KRM P5), we have been runing them for a while. Me myself over 50,000 miles. The turbo is fine, and is operationg like it should.

WShade has since totalled his P5. :( It will be missed...
