Garret GT3037s too big for our cars?
 

I have a 03.5 mp5 that I am currently building up to eventually withstand some forced induction. After I build up the engine I will do a bolt on application but want to know what sized turbo these engines can handle.

I have seen t3/t4 hybrids used as well as a supercharger which is also something I am looking at but dont know how much it can handle (of course you can change the amount of boost manually but the charger itself needs to be applicable also) and I have read the 3037 is a great turbo for 2.0l engines but I am not sure if you need a 2.0 like the sr20's to handle that turbo or if ours can handle it?

have you considered cost of the 3037? this is no cheap run-of-the-mill-turbo. that said, I think it'll be overkill for a non-drag car protege. this turbo can flow over 500hp. If you want a BB turbo, you'd be better off with a GT25xx or a GT28xx (maybe a GT2825). consider your horsepower goals and how you plan on using the car when choosing a turbo.

what are your plans for the "build up" of the engine?

The GT3037 is not made by Garret, it is made by HKS. And this turbo is GOD if you want to put it on a 2 liter engine. This turbo will spool super fast and support stupid amounts of horsepower. If you are looking for a killer street turbo you might want to look at the gt2835. It is also made by HKS but it will spool up even faster and support over 300whp. It all depends what you want the turbo to do for you.

T04E w/ 4" inlet. Hi power turbo, but good for the street. Anything bigger, you might as well go full race!

Ok see the problem here with the FS motor is, the 3037 i have heard that the "sweet spot" or most efficient spot is a little above 13psi. Now a stock FS motor will not be able to handle that kind of boost from what i have read. But a buit FS motor, shoud rock with that turbo. For the stock guys, i would recommend the gt2835, or even a gt2530. They are a little smaller so boost at a lower rpm will be reached, and it will pull hard to the FS motors redline.

Thx guys, I was almost positive that was way too much for my engine but was curious. The bolt on turbo is the last thing I am going to do to the car after I have gotten it to 160-180hp N/A (probably more towards 165) and have set up the engine to handle it(seals, rods, FMIC etc.)

What I am doing is a side project car. I read an article in SCC about dream cars and if you could build yours from scratch what would it be, and it really isnt that hard or expensive to do it.

For Example: I would like an late model RX-7 body and chassis with a Subaru EJ20 engine with a full xs engineering turbo kit using the 3037s turbo at around 450-550hp where I go an get the body from a junkyard, engine from ebay, build the entire thing as I want it, custom all aluminum suspension, titaium exhaust, custom paint, make it lok perty and enter it in some shows and go enter in some SCAA races. But it is a side project I would like to build in addition to having my daily driver (my mp5 for 2-3yrs and then the rx-8) and build it up over the next 3-4 yrs so I can space out the cost.

Even then we're talkin a 500-3000 junkyard body that you sink another 20 grand into and for 25 grand you have a car that has a ton more power, handling, looks and everything than a 40-80thousand dollar car. Anyway I dream more shit up each day =)

I will look into those other garret turbos mentioned in this thread when I get closed to actually shopping for one, I know I want a dua BB center section to ahve it spool as quick as possible but otherwise Ill learn as I go.

RX-7 with a piston engine? :tear: Sorry, I like rotaries. But if you put in a piston engine be sure you get the weight balance right! The balance with the 13B is superb. :)

yah the only reason I am considering the EJ20 or at one time the rb26dett or sr20de(maybe qr25det with sr20 crank) is the reliability of the older rotary at higher output liek I am planning way way down the road., at that point one single ping would destry the engine so if I stuck with rotary the fuel system would be as important as the rest of the engine.

Plus I am hopin that in three yrs Ill trade in my p5 as my daily driver for an rx-8. That will be my rotary.
