Flyin' Miata baseline dyno results
 

We did the baseline run on our P5 today. Underwhelming. Happily, the turbo kit is also here so we're hoping to have a more interesting graph soon :)

Damn, that thing loses torque up high. I make 20 lb foot more on mine at 6000. I'm still making 95.3 at 6250.

Can someone explain to me why we lose over 30 hp through the drivetrain compared to an RSX-S with a 6 speed?!?! I've seen baseline dynos of RSX-S' pushing over 170 at the wheels, that's LESS than 30 hp loss with a lot more power. If the P5 does truly put out 130 at the crank, then it's got the drivetrain loss of an AWD car. %26 drivetrain loss compared to %15 drivetrain loss is no laughing matter. In all fairness, you're paying $8000 less for this car but still, how can there be that big of a difference in a manual transmission for a front drive car? Is this another Nissan Sentra or Miata overrated power issue here? Okay, okay, I'll quit my bitchin', I just can't wait until I pick up my RSX-S in a couple of months & sell my P5 to my sister :D . In all fairness, the flat powerband does make it feel a little more lively than the number tell. Let's start seeing some FI P5's with respectable numbers here.

1.- Alltitude will decrese the numbers if not corrected
2.- Not every car dynoes the same
3.- Maybe our cars do not even have 130 bhp
4.- Mazda sucks!

The FM dyno is a Dynojet at 4700' altitude. We always post corrected numbers at the wheels. Our P5 has a pretty fresh engine, so it's possible that we'd pick up some power as it breaks in. But we were underwhelmed.

When comparing to the RSX and other cars for tranny loss, keep in mind that you're comparing quoted numbers from different car manufacturers. The 170 hp or 130 hp may not be perfectly accurate.

Forget about drivetrain loss. It's irrelevant. What really counts is the hp at the wheels, as that's what's actually being used by the car to accelerate.

I would not care because if I get the WRX, which already runs low 14's STOCK, I would not need to do anything to it for performance so it would be covered under warranty if it breaks.

That's my Friends WRX running 13.0 with just a few bolt ons. he ran 14.3 stock.

I wouldn't count on it. I've seen several reports from WRX owners with dead trannies whose warranty was denied because the tires they were using were stickier than the stock RE-92 (whcih covers just about every aftermarket tire). Even those who bought the dealer-option 17" BBS wheels.

I know the WRX has tranny problems, but my friend running 13.0 never had any tranny issues. He has stock tires though.
That's a bunch of BS about the dealer denying the warranty! The WRX is a performance vehicle so it will get driven like one!

Hey protegeES, there is a neglect clause in every warrantee for every car. You think it would be that easy to get parts replaced??? Shit do 100 over some speed bumps and see how fast the tech's laugh you out of the place. This is prolly a pretty abused part of the warrantee to by the dealers-thats why they look for mad excuses to not replace something like a $2000 tranny.

Why are you people knocking the WRX. It is a far better car than the Pro 5 or the MP3. That's why it costs $23000. As for the trany problems. there are no problems. The only problem that arise are when stupid highschool kids get one bought for them by mommy and daddy, then they keep dumping clutch at 5000 to 6000 rpm. I know this is a fact. I know of several people with rex's and they have no problems with the tranny. I've even talked to a guy at one of the dealers around here and he said that they have replaced several tranny's in this area. And guess what, only one of the owners was over 21 years old. That should tell you something about the tranny problems. I don't know why you would talk about the Rex like it's a bad car. The pro5 isn't a bad car either, why cant you respect the great engineering and not be pissed off and talk shit about it because you can afford one.

i love the wrx, great car for the price, just really, really ugly. But hey, when that blue AWD flash of light passes you, it's impressive. think i'd rather save my money for the Lancer evo8 if/when it finally comes to the states. Thats a lil rocket on wheels

They guy running the dyno explained to me why it had the negative power but I don't remember. This was done on a Mustang LLC dyno. It's a freak stock motor.

what's the Y axis measuring???? the one with 50 increments form -50 to 250?

Those are the HP and Torque numbers
