Finally Getting there
Its been a hell of a time coming but finally things are starting to fall into place and with luck I should be running boost before the end of the year.
Everything was going well and then I had to buy a house - man thats a drain on your tuning funds! I also managed to buy a new car to work on so I can drive my daily drive to work (much better idea). I know its not strictly a Mazda but its still got the 2.0 FS engine at heart. The car is a 1997 UK Spec Probe 16v - HiBoost full kit (and some extras). I have ordered the bits for the engine rebuild and now I only need a new clutch and I am good to go !! Matty - when you read this I need some help / advice on Haltech wiring - I remember you managed to put yours in before you ran boost and thats what I want to do - any advice you have / pitfalls please let me know. I have the F10X with the hiboost standard loom - remember this isnt going in a protege tho and the loom I have to splice into is different so if you know anything that might help post away. I'll be back this weekend with pics of the car that is getting worked over and maybe even some of the parts that are going on it ;) |
where have you been brother?!?
you'll need an ecu pinout for your wiring harness and the rest is cake. I'll give you a ring later. |

I didnt think you had my number man!! lol I dont have an ECU print out that I can rely on - one of the problems with the UK spec probe is the lack of information. The UK 16v (2.0 FS) is not the same as the US one. In the US you had the SE, same engine but different management :( The UK loom is all different too - there is a Haynes manual but ONLY for the US cars. To make it worse I want to do the work on my '97 car (not the Black '95 one) - after '96 the ECU was revised - there is some info for the erly cars (just because more of them got worked on) and FAR less for the post 96. All in it sucks !! One way or another this car will be seing boost. Has anyone compleatly replaced their ECU with a Haltech E6X? (somthing else I have been thinking about because I am not convinced the ECU is OK - the car is WAY underpowered compaired to my '95 one) |
What I would do if I were you is to go down to your local Ford dealer (drive the piss out of a Ka sport for me) and then go have a sit down chat with your servce manager. Let him know that you're building a probe and ask him to provide you with the wiring diagrams for your model and year. All of this info IS on a computer at the dealership and is easy to pull up. They don't usually give out as it will mean people will not bring work to them but in this case you're probably not taking it in to be serviced anyway. If he says "no" or gives you a hard time with it just mention that this will be getting a lot of attention and would/could be great publicity for the dealership if they were to "sponsor" your build. Let them you need no discounts or freebies....just print off the wiring diagrams and you'll mention them in the magazines as a supporter of your build...Free advertising.
If that doesn't work call Fords customer support center in the UK and ask them for the materials personally. There's no reason why they shouldn't just give you the appropriate pinout. It's pretty common fare. |
Matty - customer support means jack to Ford UK, not only that but we tend to find that even Ford UK's information systems tend not to be accurate for the Probe.
We generally have more luck with Mazda - I would try them but for the fact that the Parts I am working on are not common to the Mazda Herritage. So in short - thats a no! The good news is that I have some of the wiring sorted. I need to find 7 wires at the ECU : 4x Injector wires TPS Trigger (Tach feed) Memory (perm 12v) I have sorted out all of thease appart from the tach feed. Matty what did you use for the tach feed (possibly called "trigger") ?? I secifically need to know what was on the other end of the loom from the ECU for that wire. HELP |
I used a wire for the DIS ignition module...you won't have that though I don't think with your distributor system.
"trigger" means crank trigger...basically what tells the ignition to fire. This could come off your coil/coil pack. |
I used the CPS feed from the Dizzy in the end.
http://www.iscatech.plus.com/haltech/frstrun.jpg Its running - not very well but its running !!! Did you happen to keep a copy of your base map from pre boost ? Also did you connect your O2 sensor to the Haltech ? Its not in Juan's Loom ?! |
I can still get you the base maps but they are for the F10X not the E6X...it'll have no timing control settings.
No, I did nothing with the o2 sensor input to the Haltech. I don't care qwhat the o2 says unless it's a wideband. You CAN buy a AEM Uego wideband 5V sensor and wire it into the haltech for open loop control. |
The base map for a 2.0 FS to run on the F10X is exacly what I need - I have the HiBoost map on there now - tuned to run with boost of corse... I am wondering if thats the reason why the car will not rev cleanly.
Also just to stuff a spanner in the works the map is designed for oversize injectors and I currently have the OEM ones in there. (this could well be the reason for crap running). I want to load the base map so that I can run the car on stock injectors before I go pulling stuff apart any more - also I will get the water temp and air temp sensors in place before the next session! |
are you sure we run the same size injectors, same octane ratings, etc??
I'll pull the map for you next time I hook up my lap top....it may take a few days though. |
Bone stock the injectors should be the same size - I would be supprised if they are not.
As for octane - in the UK standard pump gas is 95 Octaine - while "Super" is 97 Octane. At the moment I am trying to decide between upgrading to a Haltech E6X or a going for a Megasquirt I (3.3 board) with the MSnS code so that I can didtch the stock ECU totally (I am sure the Stock ECU has problems). - At this point I could also dump the problematic dizzy and go with coil packs (preferable) or possibly EDIS4. Ahh decisions decisions. |
if you decide to switch to the E6X you'll basically have to make a new harness...there's a few differences.
Mega squirt would be ideal for your system....IMO. the base maps I have or tuned for 91 octane....95 could possibly be problematic. |
Matty - its funny I came to the same conclusion.
F10X is up for sale - MS II V3 will be on the way soon. Remember once upon a time you said you wanted a distributor in your car instead of coil packs ? - well I am about to pull mine and bin it, along with the MS II I am also: removing the MAF removing the distributor fitting a trigger wheel & VR sensor fitting EDIS4 ignition fitting wideband O2 If you know anyone who might want the F10X get in touch (going with the loom, sensors, Water Temp sensor casting, boost controll and trim - pre mapped too) the MS is one hell of a learning experinace but I already know far more about EFI now than I did last week.. lol |
well, honestly...I need the box..not the harness. wanna make me a SWEET offer on just the box? mine got fried by a friend who threw a trickle charger on my car while working on it.
pop goes the haltech. |
Well what I need for it is £400 (UKP) thats about $700 US for the whole lot (including the water temp sensor casting alowing you to mount it in a coolent pipe) and the map sensor etc etc etc.
I have sent you a PM with my numbers in - get on the horn man lets talk. |
