I'm researching what kinda of ems system to get for a t3 turbonetics intercooled setup that is being custom built for my pr5...it'll be set at 6psi then up to 8psi which i've been told is very safe...eventually we want to reach 12psi with a tuned ems system (to be purchased later)

Stock ECU: I understand the FM protege kit runs off the stock ecu which isn't programmable so i'm not sure how it handles boost or protects from knocking...but it's cheap ($0)

Rising Rate FPR (FMU) and ignition retardation switch: I was told that a FMU would work well (and is quite affordable ~$200) assuming that the pr5 is not a returnless fuel system...however the draw backs i've heard were it gave better results but has no safeguard for failure

piggyback ecu: this i'm not sure of exists for the pr5 yet...but wouldn't a afc mimic its effect giving another possibility...again without any safeguard

stand alone ems: cheapest i've seen them are $1,500 from motec...i've read some posts on the haltec unit but it's just too expensive for me with the cost of the kit

i only have 6k miles on the car and am worried about blowing the engine b/c of this...i road race (on a road course not suv slalom on the highway) so the engine will see some stress but nothing in the amount of endurance racing...it is also a daily driver

i'm not sure i understand all the options correctly as i'm not too familiar with forced induction...i don't want to spend over $800 on a system but if it is the only good choice then i will...thanks in advance

If your looking for a STAND ALONE fuel management system....go to SDSEFI.com........i can get your hands on these units. Read and let me know what you think. These are more less expensive as Motec or Haltech. No LapTop needed. Take a look and let me know.

The FM Protege kit uses a rising rate fuel pressure regulator and a voltage clamp plus the stock ECU. So far that is the only solution available on dealing with boost.

FM is working on the ECU issues that the Protege has.

Terry, aka spoolinMP3 (who I just saw has joined this board), is working on a complete stand alone system for the third gen...

does a standalone system need to be built specifically for the car?...i thought it bypassed the ecu altogether (versus a fmu or piggyback systems did) therefore being completely tuneable

From my knowledge it isn't built for the car.....I've know 2 friends of mine who are running this system in their 2.0l 16v VW GTI motors. Both are producing 230-250 whp. The system can retard timing,advance timing, add fuel etc. Did you happen to look at the site? SDSEFI.com. Remeber the main thing here...CAN$ vs USD$.....also you get a LCD controller to program the unit. On the sie it breaks it down for you. Let me know what you think. Not trying to make a sale here, just know that its good stuff.

thanks for the info on the site...i looked at it and will have the guy building the turbo look into it also...he really likes the aem system with its plug and play but its not avail for my car

Personally I don't like the SDS, it can be difficult to tune and is a pain to setup if you want timing control.

If you are going to go with an EMS you need to save your money up and get something worthwhile, you can piggyback all day and still be left with a poor result. The kits I sell are $1300 for the E6K setup, thats less than a Motec.

Only other thing you could do around $800 is a E-manage setup, but those again are limited. Do some research and find out what you really need from the system. A FMU won't solve your tuning problems... you need ignition and boost control along with fuel to keep things running right.
