BPT Questions

Does the BPT have stronger internals (rods, Pistons) than the normal BP DOHC????? I am trying to decide on wether or not to buy a BPT or to turbo a BP and beef up the internals. Cuz if the BPT already has stonger internals it would save me $$$ to just buy that instead of have rods and pistons made.

So what would you guys do....

A. Build up one hell of a serious BP with a Garrett T4.

B. Get a BPT from corksport and have a custom tubular manifold made and then put the T4 on.

The reason for the T4 is cuz I got a sweet deal on a T4 with an external wastegate from a friend of mine.

Which would you people do???

Sorry if I'm a little out of my element here but there's a discussion going on in the 3rd gen/drivetrain forum about exactly this. The gist of it is that the BPT isn't worth the time to install in our 3rd Gen Proteges.

Here's the link

Questions still to be answered.

As I said, I don't really know enough to talk intelligently on this topic. However, since you seem to be looking for our validation (j/k) :) I give'er a go:

If we take the topic in the discussion posted above (my last post) as valid, then it makes no sense to go with a BPT engine. Rather, you would be better to build up your current BP since you're assured of the fitment.

However, if you don't have a 3rd Gen (you haven't said) then the above is moot since I know even less about 2nd Gens than I do about 3rd Gens :D

It would seem to me that the BP engine, having been around for awhile, would have a fairly ready supply of parts available. I would build it up into whatever monster you're after :p

i'd stay with my bp as well - the bpt is just extra expense for what will be a hugely expensive project anyway.

if you plan on using a t04 e or b, your lag will be unbearable for an engine that redlines before 7k. replacing the computer (amongst other things - injectors, fuel pump it never ends...) will allow you to move that redline a little and optimise things for that turbo. i'd have to guess that you'd be looking just after 4k before you were at full boost with a t04 exhaust turbine - i don't know if theres an a/r that would bring it down lower than that but these are the things you need to know.

be careful, even tho the engine is damn strong, a t04 pushing hard (and whats the point of not pushing it hard? get a smaller turbo if you only want 6-10psi) will likely break everything the engine is connected to - ie the transmission, transaxles etc. there are, of course ways around this if you want to spend the money.

if you have the $$ you could probably make it work but streetable?? doubtful....turbo too big, exhaust gas too little. for the track? hmmm dunno....

bang for the buck value = dodgy.

i'd be asking your friend if he could get his hands on a medium 2 large t3 - much faster boost and you can run it at low psi with next to no modifications - pretty much just a FMU for more gas will do it - have a look around some of the recent turbo threads and see what the guys have been up to....

oooh, i sound like a big negative grandaddy, sorry about that, just thinking out loud - i don't believe you would be happy with the end result, i think it'd be frustrating but i could be wrong???

I have already planned and set aside for custom made axles, and I have a BP head thats ported and polished on the exhaust side sitting on my workbench. Getting a T4 to spool was something I considered and I have made plans to compesate for the size of the turbo. I did ask my buddy if he could locate a T3/T04 with all the goodies for me and he said he would try. So we will see. Anybody else have some thoughts on the subject???

walter August-13th-2002 11:12 PM

How strong are the stock crankshafts??? Is that something to worry about at 18psi????

Farsyde August-13th-2002 11:23 PM

geeze you guys are friggin crazy. How much boost are you plannin to run that you need a T04????? A T4 would be borderline overkill. A T28 is good for 16-18psi. That would give you about 300hp!!!!!

stef_nz August-13th-2002 11:40 PM

agreed...stupid tranny - has anyone come up with a simple way to stop it flexing so much jesse?

is this a daily driver?

i think it'd be interesting trying to put that kind of hp to the ground in a fwd car... but it would be hella fun no?

walter August-14th-2002 12:47 AM

This will be a semi daily driver. Might drive it about 100-150 mi a week. I'm keeping the Probe for daily transport. Just so you ppls know its an 89 GT (Turbo).

walter August-14th-2002 12:49 AM

Is there any other tranny's to use that a are a bit tougher??? Like from a 626 or something??? How strong are the axles???

stef_nz August-14th-2002 06:05 AM

i'm stepping well outside my knowledge bubble here but i have to wonder if you couldn't start with stiffer engine mounts first, then maybe try welding a rod or two from the transmission housing to the block?

like i said, i have no knowledge or experience in this area whatsoever but thinking about a problem never killed anyone......

stef_nz August-14th-2002 04:45 PM

sounds like a patch up job would be a complex operation - best to build it properly in the first place eh?
stupid tranny!
/me kicks transmission
:bonk:

Farsyde August-14th-2002 06:24 PM

is there any hope at all? I know you can't just throw in any old tranny but from the sounds of it are we SOL or is there some golden car that has the perfect tranny.

Is building up the tranny an option?? What exactly does this mean??
