Hello everyone!
I am new to this forum just regitered 5 mins. ago found your link on a miata forum.
Well I just sold my turbo miata not to long ago and purchased an mp3, love the thing but I must say its a dog. I am intersted in getting a cast manifold for the car does any one no where I can get one? Any other mazda engines fit same manifold? I can easily get a custom tubular manifold made down here like the one i made for the miata but I want a log cast style manifold because of cracking. Theres a guy down here in miami I think thomas knight that does turbo probes and mx6 maybe I will pay him a visit. Does anyone know if the JDM mp3 (famalia) comes turbo and does there manifold fit our engines?
I also spoke to corksport and the told me that they will have a turbo manifold available sometime next year but I cant wait!
I already have pretty much everything to comprise the kit

intercooler
so all I need is the manifold get the turbo and make intercooler piping.

HEy, I have the manifold from Knight and I am planning on installing it once I find a shop that knows what they're doing. Below is a pic of the T3/T04 and the mani. Our (all 3gens 1.8 and 2.0) manifolds are the same as the 4 cyl 626, the probe - the F-series motor. As far as I know there is no turbo protege offered overseas, only the FSZE that uses high-compression and that's in the Sport-20 (Japanese version of the Protege5).

I'm curious about your ideas for your system. Are you using bigger injectors - if so what size? I have some 245 cc ones from Knight and an external pump to satisfy the fuel needs. I have pretty much lost hope of finding a good way to manage the engine without going with a really expensive stand-alone setup like Electromotive. I know Corksport says they are developing a chip for a turbo application but who knows when that will be available? What did you have in mind?

I too was looking into turbocharging my 1.8L (FD) motor and was looking for pistons to lower the compression so I could run up to 15 psi. No luck...restricted to 6 psi or 10 psi intercooled. I was running into problems finding the electronics equipment...there is now a thread for Haltech that looks promising! They have MAP sensors that will take 15 or 30 psi and many other related gadgets!
Also, where were you planning to mount the turbo?
I have a IHI turbo from a 2.3L Ford with integrated wastegate so the unit is compact, but all I could see was to mount it over the tranny and this makes for a lot of qweer piping. I'd like to mount it between the rad and the block by the exh. manifold but I don't think there is room!
Also is the Knight manifold cast? and where does it place the turbo?

Thanks dialup for your input on the manifold, I really appreciate it.
As for my setup I will be using a link system for electronics its an engine management system kinda like haltech but its a plug and play unit that replaces the stock ecu takes litteraly 5 minutes to intsall without tuning. As for injectors I will be using 550cc, the link can run any amount of injectors and you basically program fuel, ignition and boost curves via the keypad or labtop. I chose it over haltech or tec II because of super easy instalation. I plan on running 10lbs of boost. I have the intercooler thats used on skylines but I will have to modify the bumper support to hold the huge intercooler. I have a guy down here that does all that, he builds race cars snd has lots of experiece. He built up my miata with stock internals 16lbs of boost at 281hp to the wheels. He makes beautiful equal length manifolds and thin walled intercooler piping but I just wanted a cast manifold cuz he is pretty pricey. If I am forced to go with a tubular about 900 beans I'll probably mount the turbo under the manifold. But does your knight manifold come casted or tubular.Thanks for the input again
As for a turbo I think I'll go with a 16g tdo5h any suggestions?

As i understand from here a 323 with 1.8 engine and 115 HP has been turbocharged with HKS turbo and get 172 HP and somewhere from 0-100km/h with 7 seconds.

That was a one off HKS concept car. They are not building any of the parts for production. Turbonetics probably has the best quality cast iron turbo manifold currently available for the FS engine. I don't have the part number in front of me, but give them a call. The retail cost was around $570 I think.

Man I wish I had intenret at work, it's been a while since I've checked the board. Anyways, Thanks Mlight for the reference. I'll def check that out. Could you email me the directions or do you have their #?. The only other place I've seen is ARD performance but I haven't researched them much.

Re: the manifold, since I bought it along with the rest of the junk I did'nt get a specific price but I think he sells it for $500 or so. It's not tubular, equal length or anything fancy but I'm not too concerned about that. It might not be the most efficient design when it's all said and done but I'm not going to be competing with Schumacher and Hakkinen on the street either. As far as placement the piece is such that it comes right off in front of the block, with the turbo lowered in the bay a little and to the right of center of the motor between it and the radiator. Yes it figures to be a squeeze but there should be enough room.

Right now this thing is on ice though. First I am waitiing to hear about CS's chip for the turbo application, and second I just replaced my tires so the fundage isn't all that spactacular. Thrid I'm just really busy.

The Turbonetics manifold has been posted about before. The problem is that the turbo placement will likely eliminate the primary cat on the 3rd Gen Proteges, which I believe is illegal in every state. Also, the engine compartment in the 3rd Gens is pretty snug, making turbo placement and tubing fitment pretty tight. This makes for a diffult do it yourself installation. Also, I'm pretty sure the Protege has a fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail in the engine compartment, with the fuel return line to the fuel tank.

This is true. The manifold will eliminate the primary cat. But I really couldn't give a hoot! I guess you can run it with the cat you will just have to intstall it with some ingenuity! Well I'll keep u guys posted because I have the manifold and turbo on order!

Are there any further developments on the turbos yet? I was thinking of calling Peter Farrel (He is about 2 hours away and is the only reputable shop near me) to see how much it would cost to get a custom setup made. I know how much the part would cost but am curious what the labor would run and what their recommendations would be for the FS engine. Will let you know what they have to say.
