Windshield cracking theory
Hey everyone, I was just thinking about something that may be some of the reason most of us are getting stress cracks in our windshields. I was wondering if this could be caused by body "roll." I just wanted to see if the people out there that have the strut bars on their pros are having this as common as the people without them are. I don't know if this is a feasible theory or not I just am pissed I've went through 2 windshields in under a year. I don't have the strut bars, and I would like to hear from everyone else, cracks or no cracks. Thanks:dunno: :dunno: :dunno:

I really don't thin body roll has any thing to do with it. I work in a body shop and we have vehicles that have Frame damage all the time and windows/windsheilds aren'y broken. Of course there are times when they are broken, but mainly not due to frame damage.
My dad's wrecked his T-bird a year ago (we're finally getting around to repairing it) and the whole rear clip needs to be replaced, but the rear windsheild was intact. |
Our windshields crack because they are crappy pieces of shit.
I'm so fed up with mine already - 38,000 miles and I can barely drive into the sun - it's WAAAY too "speckled" for that mileage. Luckily, I have not had any cracks, other than two nice stone chips that have not spread at all. But the windshield is probably my biggest complaint among the few I have about the car - it's junk. Glass replacement should not be routine maintenance - but it seems that the OEM glass is made to be replaced. ~HH |
Once on Car Talk, they said that Japanese glass chips easier than U.S.-made glass.
I have a P5 with the tower strut, and I have had to replace my windshield. The crack was below the passenger side wiper. There was just the tiniest chip imaginable. I have heard of glass cracking due to the car flexing, but I think our cars are pretty stiff. I subscribe to the "crappy glass" theory. |
I agree about the cheapness of our glass.
About a week after I got my P5, A pebble hit my windshield and left a tiny pock-mark. I figured that an auto glass shop would be able to fix it with epoxy, so I drove to the nearest one. By the time I slowly drove 5 miles to the shop, the pock-mark had turned into a spider crack, and the spider crack into a full-on broken windshield! Well, at least I dont have that crappy glass on there anymore. :) |
SAME DAMN PEOBLEM
I TOOK MY PROTEGE TO MAZDA AND DEMANDED THEY REPLACE MY WINDSHIELD! I have 9400 miles in 6 months of having the car, and i had a ball point pin tip sized indention on the passenger side windshield and the whole dman thing cracked as soon as I turned on the defroster. I told mazda to fix the windsheild or keep the car and give me a check for the 17,900 i paid for the car, IN CASH. THEY REPLACED MY WINDSHEILD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

my crack isn't from body roll, its from a good size rocking hitting it, the cracks go from one side of the car to the other :( |
Ya know,
I purchased my P5 in september, i now have a nifty crack that follows exactly down the defroster on the dash, then it goes down on each side, its now going up on both sides. I dont mind replacin the window, however.....If it happens again im going to be upset. Windows are like 500 bucks! |
you can get a aftermarket windshield installed for 200 bucks
