What wax or polish do you guys use?

After washing and waxing both cars today, I was wondering what wax or polish you guys use?

I use a synthetic polish called NuFinish paste that comes in an orange can. Some people say its crap and it hurts the vehicles finish. But, since its synthetic, it lasts many months of rain and snow, as long as the rain and snow is relatively clean. I barely have to wash the car because the waters beads into small droplets and sheets off when the car is moving. The downside to it is that it doesn't really give the car a new glass looking shine, like organic carnuba waxes provide. And on a silver car, a shine is even more difficult to notice

On the other car just recently, I used Mothers Carnuba Cleaner Wax paste that comes in a red can. More difficult to apply than NuFinish sinces its a hard paste, but smells better. No petroleum smell since it's made from organic ingredients. The shine isn't as good, maybe because I didn't wax it hard enough. It's an enthuists wax so maybe more time is required. As for the protection and water beading properties, I have to wait until it rains.

I use Meguiars Gold Wash when I wash my shit. When I was I use Dawn (or any wax stripping dish soap) to strip any old wax the I use the three step Meguiars wax system. Paint Cleaner- Deep Polish-Crystal Wax. Or whatever, perhaps I pay too much attention, someone elses might have some better advice.

onehawaiian April-20th-2002 05:01 AM

i normally use dri-wash n' guard by envirotech to clean and polish my ride. but from time to time i will use mother's or meguiar's stuff. i found that meguiars has a little deeper shine. all three are solid tho. :)

Traveler April-20th-2002 01:33 PM

I use Carnu-B Brazilian Caurnauba wax. Super shine, no surface scratches at all. The car still looks new after 16 months.

hondagal April-20th-2002 09:16 PM

Zaino all the way.. it is pricey but it is the best I have seen.

tradr April-20th-2002 10:44 PM

I use 3m stuff..

glaze, and cleaning wax..

sandman April-21st-2002 12:45 AM

Haven't tried Zaino yet, but I hear it's bar none the best shiznit you can put on your vehicle.

Everyone I've talked to says it lasts for months... Water AND dust don't stick to it.

Smoothy April-21st-2002 10:59 AM

Zaino is awesome! I have 3 "layers" on mine so far (unlike some on here with like 10+) but as soon as this weather calms down on the weekend I'm doing more. The more you put on, the wetter/deeper reflective and protection you will get. The clear polish (3rd step) really works awesome on the wheels (not tires, the tire polish is awesome for that), I've never had brake dust worse than noticable close up.
It is a little on the expensive side, but you use such a small amount of each, the bottles last a good while.
Make sure you get the clay bar, I couldn't believe how well it worked on my brand new ride....you can feel it picking things out of your finish!
And the Zaino brothers are top notch as far as helping you with any questions...always available via email or phone....you'll never find the engineers from Mothers or Meguires available like that! :P

Bruce95fmla April-21st-2002 11:28 AM

I mix my wax most time , I take eagle one wet look and mequires wax , (red bottle) and mix em together , just enough to stay thick and let it sit for a few days after using it and it just bonded together for somereason(I dunno why) anyway I tend to use this and the car looks awesome ,,.. I am gonna use a clay bar before the show though

Smoothy

Not true, i emailed Meguires and 5 mins later he was helping, im sure Zaino rocks as well but just saying i have had great results both with the product and the people from Meguires.

ToBeBackDoc April-21st-2002 02:07 PM

I just gave my P5 its first waxing and I used Meguiars and I'm real impressed. I usually use Liquid Glass which may only be a local thing but it works great. I also use some kinda glaze wax I got from a friend that works as a detailer at the Ford shop here in town... it's pretty good.

I do the same...its all I use....I have a good friend that is into Trucks...and has a show truck, he street drives it as well, but shows it too. He introduced me to Dri-wash a few years ago. ITS AWSOME....and so easy to use as well. the finish shines so deep....they have a complete line of products for car care...and ALL of them are environmentally safe. in case any of you want to check them out here is their website.

http://waterless-wash.com/

some would say they are a little pricy....but then again...isn't your ride worth the best? Mine is!

:D

yeah, envirotech has cool car stuff. i like the leather/vinyl cleaner (not "greasy"). the driwash can actually be used in several different applications too, for the deepest shine possible. there is a corvette guy (has an online site) with tons of tips and tricks to get the most of your driwash (waterless car-wash).

sandman April-21st-2002 07:35 PM

I posted a link to this page some time ago that was about waxing your car.

Since the topic came up again I thought I would re-post it.

It's from another forum I'm on. The guy talks about the best brands and the best way to apply for that 'wet' look.

onehawaiian April-22nd-2002 02:41 AM

hey cool tips! i dunno if i can put that much work into my car as i am extremely lazy. i think i'll just pay for that and do it 3-4 times a year. :p

2002VividYellow April-22nd-2002 09:13 AM

Zaino, best stuff I've ever used!

Dave Cameron April-22nd-2002 04:43 PM

Do some internet searching, consumer reports has done car wax testing every few years, Last time through, they liked prestone and plain commercial Xymol wax. I have used Japon wax before, but based on thier recommendations, I started using prestone last fall. It actually did very very well through the winter, and cost less than 10.00 per bottle!
Cheap and recommended!
Enjoy

NoahsMP5 April-22nd-2002 06:33 PM

Meguires. I just cleaned, polished, and waxed it. Looks pretty good. I would like to try Zaino though. Only heard good things about it.

bmassche April-23rd-2002 08:24 PM

Mothers Good!

I use Mothers CLeaner Wax in the red can, it lasts all winter and
gives a good shine. You have to get it all off when dry though or
else it is difficult to get off.:beer:beer

jcilforever April-23rd-2002 09:44 PM

Liquid Glass all the way, keeps the finish like new even five years later, bonds and lasts for about 6 months.

Installshield April-24th-2002 12:25 AM

My dad just ordered a bunch of Zaino, so i will drive home sometime soon and use it. I have been using a lot of Zymol stuff. I am very impressed. They sell some cleaner/waxes for about $12 for 16oz and some waxes for $500+ for 8oz!!!! My friend ordered a jar of the regular wax for $35 and it takes very little to due a whole car. Anyway the car looks awesome when you are done

go to www.zymol.com if you are interested

NegatiZE April-25th-2002 04:17 PM

To get this:
http://www.knology.net/~negatize/images/afterwaxed.JPG

I use 3M Wax and Imperial Hand Glaze. Found it at Pep Boys both for $20 total.

HubbMP5 April-25th-2002 05:01 PM

ZYMOL!!!! Wonder German All-natural polish. Made with almond & banana & other crap. If used properly, the shine is unbeatable. About $15 for the bottle of polish- they have other products, too. For instance, they have a carbon based wax that retails for a couple hundred $ a bottle! (I haven't tried that one yet- maybe when I get my M3... someday)

onehawaiian April-26th-2002 03:29 PM

ha ha, dude, what's the point of spending $1200 on exterior shine when it'll rain 5min after you wash it! those guys are funny, unless their customer base is centered in the desert... :p

Sir Nuke April-26th-2002 04:18 PM

and even IF you owned some $200K show car or antique...it doesn't sid out side...it doesn't get driven daily or even on every weekend!!!

guess if you have more money than you know what to do with....ya gotta spend it on something!! lol

NOT TO MENTION....for THAT kind of money...it BETTER come with nekid women to put it on your car!!!! lol

Racer91 April-26th-2002 04:21 PM

I would pay the extra for the naked girls option...... SN was there a specific store that option was at LOL

Hey man trying to make you feel better sorry about the car Freakin birds:mad:

UNFROTUNATLY....the nekid women option wasn't REALLY an option...at least not one that they advertised on the site...the way I look at it...if you can afford to spend $1500 on a tub of car wax.....you won't have ANY problem finding nekid women to come and apply it to your car...or anything else for that matter! lol

thanks for the feeling so woe for me dude....I am feeling a bit better now....already called the GOOD glass shop in town...and the insurance company.....gonna cost me $150 out of my pocket....and the new glass goes in on Monday afternoon. And I am thankful that the dirty bastard got off the ground that far and didn't take out the hood...or rip off the roofrack or something else...or even flop over the top and take out the sunroof!! just glass.....after a little work you won't even know it happened. :{D and there will be NO BONDO on the car!!! lol

mnkyboy April-30th-2002 12:31 PM

http://www.zymol.com/destiny.htm

Read the instrutions... "Put a very small amount of the glaze to the palm of your hand. Use the warmth of your hands to melt the Carnauba"

LOL, the "warmth" of your hands. Man, that wax must be for really lonely/rich men!

mnkyboy April-30th-2002 12:37 PM

What is the correct way to keep your cars finish maintained. Polish or wax? or both?

I need to do my car soon, and it looks like im going to get some Zymol or Zaino. Polish or wax?

I wash my car weekly. I plan on waxing (2) times a year. Is this good enough to maintain the paints finish? Some cars require hardly any maintaining, while other require alot more. How do Mazda finishes in the long run?

onehawaiian April-30th-2002 03:33 PM

according to the link sandman posted, you use both. it's wash, polish, wax. i tried it on my ride thise weekend and OMIGOD. talk about a freakin' deep, wet shine! yeah, i've had nice shines b4, but i could actually tell the difference. i used the dri-wash n' guard to clean and polish my ride, then the meguiar's gold class wax. took a little while, but it was worth it!

Thanks for beating me to the punch! :D You're right - it's worth it, but a helluva lot of work - especially if you're like me and you don't have an electric buffer yet...

mazda disciple April-30th-2002 11:36 PM

I use meguires yellow #26 to wax it every 3-4 months and in between I use Zymol. I also use mcguires to wash it looks good but whatever use what you like

One of my clients owns a highend body shop so he waxes and polishes my car for me. (I help him with his theater.)He has this wax, no word of a lie is $5000 a tin (22oz.)!! It was designed by a chemist as a dialectric for high-tension wires. They also found it works great on cars. Incredible shine! Think its nuts though, I wouldnt pay for it!

kad July-1st-2002 04:25 AM

oookay

*brings thread back from dead*
hehehe
today i went to pep boys and bought some wax
it was either meguiers gold series( $6 i think) or whatever
or this blue xymol stuff($13)
the xymol stuff cost a bit more so i got it
i remembered reading about it on here so i did

sooo this was my first time waxing a car
fairly quick... just used and applicator to put some on, and then buffed it off with a terry cloth cotton towel.
my car was already pretty shiny before, and i really couldn't see much more shine... after i compared it halfway through. the waxed parts felt a lot smoother though.

well
very interesting link.... http://www.nsxsc.com/nsexcitement/waxtest.html

i REALLY think you all should read through this page i found
anyone seen any other tests like this so we can compare the results?
very interesting eh? $12.95 per bottle beats 144 a bottle!
and the beloved meguiers does horribly. i think i'll be buying a bottle of this zaino stuff REAL soon.
:)
