What is the RMS output of the stock HU?
 

Hi guys,

I have a 2002 P5. I am thinking of getting a JVC KD-SX980 Mp3 deck to replace the stock HU. The JVC is rated at ~18 watts RMS. Does anyone know what the RMS output of the stock radio is?

Will simply changing the deck improve the sound quality at all? or is the JVC underpowered for the speakers in the car?

Also, any opinions on this deck would be appreciated, especially concerning fit and performance. Futureshop is selling this unit installed for 299$ CDN.

the stock deck only puts out about 10 watts.....

so yes....that deck would make a LITTLE difference.....

the stock speakers are good for 25 watts.....that is IT!

if you really want to crank it up....your best bet is to get an amp....you have a few choices...you can either replace the stock head unit so that you can play MP3's and get an amp and new speakers for the doors and a sub if you like.....

OR you can just get an amp, speakers...and boost the stock head unit...but then you don't have the MP3 capability.....

Well, the main reason to get the JVC deck is for MP3. I don't listen to super loud music, so getting new speakers isn't really an option. I was just curious if the JVC deck would have a better sound quality then the current stock HU... or is the limiting factor the stock speakers.

the fact that you will be able to put more power to the stock speakers will in itself improve the quality...the stock speakers are nothing to write home about...but they are pretty decent for stock speakers. and as I said....they are rated for up to 25 watts.....so I believe that just replacing your head unit....sounds like it will meet your needs just fine.

I dunno if the stock stero configurations are different for every model and for every year, but my 98 se has 50W x 2 at the rear....and im sure the wattage on the 2 front speakers is around the same....so total speaker wattage is around 200W.

I have read here that some of you guys have 10W total???? wtf??

uhh no.. 200W peak, peak ratings are fake, usually the peak is double the RMS rating so they are 25W RMS each, so thats 100w total

i dunno if it said peak or whatever....i jsut read 50W on each rear speaker....

well...like crash...I have a 2002 P-5...and I have replaced the stock speakers....and if you need...I can take a pic of the stockers.....they are labled on the back.... althought its not labled as peek or RMS ... but none the less the speakers have "25watts" right on them.....and that is pretty much negligable anyway...since the stock head unit only puts out about 10 watts anyway....and his new deck only 18.

the rating of the speaker (usually in peak power for cheap speakers) has nothing to do with the output of the head unit. I would be very surprised if the stock HU was much over 10W RMS per channel.

yeah even if it was 10W its probably at 20% THD which means that 10W is useless
