Tinting Moonroof glass???

Has anyone had their moonroof glass tinted? I have noticed that there is a lot of heat that comes through the moonroof (I wish they had chosen a different color than black for the material underneath). Any pros/cons? I hesitate to have it done, or can it be done it seems that there would be a lot of disassembly of the headliner involved and I'm not sure that I'm ready to trust anyone else with that on my new car yet:D .

I couldn't find info in other threads.

Thanks for the help.

i got my moonroof on my ES tinted with 20% metallic black tint. it protects from the sun a lot better and it looks great. it can be done easily so there's no need to hesitate... :D

a shop i had mine done at(pretty reputable) said that they could'nt tint the moonroof because of the heat generated up in there could bust the glass. i was dissapointed. not sure if it's true but that's what they told me.

well, it kinda depends, generaly moonroof glass is just like any other automotive glass. Never seen one break and i have done plenty of them. But it depends on the type of glass used for the moonroof. there should be some type of etched stamp with codes etc... with that an auto glass shop can tell you what type it is.

Go ahead and get it tinted.

Yes sure. Go for it. Got mine tinted to 15%. Blocks out 45% of the heat that would normally come in through there.

Not to mention it looks better :D

Had mine tinted too.. The heat reduction is amazing.

I wonder why mazda didn't tint the glass from the factory? The focus comes with a dimpled pattern which reduces sunlight coming in.

only a 45% heat reduction????? with 15% it should be more like 60-65%. Assuming you have metallized film.

Pretty sure they do tint them, although a factory tint is no match for a good aftermarket film.

if i read you correctly, we call that a dot matrix (same stuff that is found on the perimiter of some cars windows or at the top of the rear window) and while it does cut down light, it does nothing for heat and unfortunately, without some hard work and good luck, tinting that would be a small nightmare.

Whoops. Sorry heh. My sunroof is 35% tint. My tintband on windshield is 15% as are my back 3 windows.

Sorry about that.

The shop I had mine done at doesn't even touch windows with that dotty crap on it..

Hi Jason

Where did you get your tint done? I had my moonroof tinted but I did not do quite that much. I think it is around 35% as I wanted some reduction but not too dark as then why bother having a moonroof. I figured it would also give me some protection for the interior. Shop charged $35 since I was a member of this board. Cool! :)

Cheers
Chris

Chris -

I had my tinting done at European Auto Tint. They're on the south side on calgary trail. Really close to Weber Motors, actually.

I had the following tinting done - 35% on the side windows and moonroof, 23% for the eyebrow and rear window. I didn't do the driver or passenger windows - wanted to keep it legal. Looking back I think I would have gone one step darker - 23 on the sides and 17 on the front and back, but i'm very happy with my current tint percentages.

They did a fantastic job, but be prepared to be without your car for at least 3 hours. They take out any windows that can be rolled down and bake them under a heat lamp to cure them faster. That way you can use your windows right after you leave instead of having to wait for days before you can roll down your windows.

Cost me 280 + GST to have it all done. If you wanted the driver and passenger windows done as well his quote was 320 + GST.

They also can do the 3m invisible rock guard on the p5s for 220 + gst. Covers the headlights, fogs, and the first 12 inches of your hood. I didn't do that yet, but plan on having it done before winter hits. (next month ;) )

If you want to see pics of my tint, check out the pics link in my sig.

Jason,

Interesting that Weber charges $400 for the rockguard. If they are gettig their stuff done there, including the 3M guard, then they are making quite the mark-up. Plus European would probably give them a break compared to you or me.

My eyebrow is shaped a bit different as it curves down on the sides. I am trying to post some pics.

Hey, if you want to see my rock guard before you decide maybe we can hook up sometime soon?

Cheers
Chris

they take the glass out and bake it under a heat lamp?????? Did you actually see this? sounds like total BS to me. We only ever removed truck back windows or rubber sealed side windows, the Cali sun is our heat lamp :) An good tinter will get most of the water out and a few mins with a heat gun on the edges or an hour outside in the hot sun, will seal up the edges nicely. The rest will take longer, generally 7-10 days for hybrid metallized film and 10-20 for sputtered "all metal" films.
