Sub help

With the money I get for Christmas I might want to get a subwoofer or two. I don't want to spend more than about $500 for the whole shabang, assuming I can figure out how to install it myself (maybe, maybe not).

I like the Kicker Solo-Baric subs, but cannot justify spending $350+ on a single 12", so I would resort to eBay to buy one (or two). Right now there is an auction for a new Kicker Solo-Baric L7 S12L7 (12") for $190 each. Then there's a box and an amp to be had.

Or, possibly a single 12" Crossfire sub? 2002BlackMP5 Said something about his Crossfire sub in the Photo/Video Gallery…he absolutely loved it. I don’t know how much it cost him, but it sounds like a pretty good deal if it isn’t too much.

But, what about two 10’s? Two Kicker S10L5 Solo-Baric subs are about $225 on eBay.

Can anyone suggest different subs that might be what I’m looking for? What about an amplifier and a box?

That's pretty much exactly what I'm looking for. DO you have any experience with this sub/amp combo? If not you, anyone else?

Oh, I've never heard of the brand Elemental...any comments on them? Do they make quality products? Anyone?

Don't wast your money on solobarics. With only a $500 budget you won't have enough money for an amp with enough power to move them.

Use Kicker Comp VRs. they don't need as much power and hit just as hard. I would highly reccomend against ebay. Always buy audio products with a warrenty. I wouldnt't even buy from an internet dealer.

if you can find a nice box/sub combo (same manufacturer) that would be your best bet, as it's important that the sub be matched to the box for good sound quality.

Also how much space are you willing to give up? If its not much, look for subs that work well in small sealed boxes, JL, DEI, MTX and Image Dynamics come to mind.

In my experience with Car Audio, when i first started out, i used to buy the cheaper off brands and was never happy. They either just never sounded the way i wanted, or they'd crap out regularly. So, my point is, save your money and buy components from good brands. It will save you a lot of headaches, but it may take longer to get them since they usually cost more, but the sacrifice must be made for the greater good :D

JL 250/1 about $350 (less on eBay)
JL 10-W3 or 12-W3 about $200 (less on eBay)
sealed box and audio shop install about $100
(I'd buy the box at an audio shop b/c shipping can be expensive. Make sure it's to manuf. spec though. Don't take the shop's word that "it will sound good")

I've had good experiences on eBay. Personally I'd rather have better speakers without a warranty than inferior ones with warranty.

"O yay, my POS stopped working. They'll give me a new POS."

JL amps are amazingly flexible (making constant wattage across a range of impedences) and have excellent quality construction and durablity. And the W3s (and the W3-version2) are excellent speakers. Way underrated capacity.

See the reviews on www.carreview.com, also a great source for user reviews of many aftermarket products.

Why bother with the W3 right now when if you look you can get a W6, old style, for $150.

I have 2 in inventory at my tweeter and my boss already said I could except a phone order. They are brand new and you get a warrenty.

Also in the beggining of next year JL will release an anniversary W6 of sorts for sale, not to mention a line of less expensive amps, a hole lot of new sub boxes and a 8W7!

I want a Jl W7, but thats like 4000 with the amp , so thats outta the question...if u want something cheap just get a w6 or alpines, my personal opinion is that u can buy a cheap sub, just start with a good amp, cuz then u can buy a better sub later on and use the same amp , its alot cheaperto upgrade a sub, then it is an amp , just my opinion

right now im running,

15' Rockford Power DVC - like 300 bucks when i bought it
Rockford Power 800.2 Amp - 999 but i got it for 600
thats canadian prices..

might not be a w7 but it really pounds....not competition quality, but who the hell wants the ears ringing while they drive=]

That is almost exactly what I am running in my car right now. Except I have a custom built box. It hits really hard, low and clean.
The elementals are being compared to the Brahma, which is also an excellent woofer. Do some research on various stereo forums also besides listnening to demos at the stores.

I live in canada the w7 retails for 1800 and Jl1000 amp is 1800 as well , last time i checked at least..alot cheaper for u americans=]

204_MP5 December-25th-2002 12:29 AM

Sorry for dbl posting but, i was talking about 13.5 W7, and the jl 500 wont push the w7 worth shiet...u need the JL 1000 to push it so it sounds good, if u dont got that power running it theres no point in even haveing a W7

1st MP3 in NH December-25th-2002 12:43 AM

THe 500/1 will be ablw to push put about 700 watts rms but your right thats a little lacking for the 13.5W7, but It is enough for the 12W7.
