Split my sub.....getting a new one...
I had a pioneer 12" IMPP....with a kenwood 300 watt bridged down to one channel....and i opened the trunk yesterday....and there was a clean split from the metal cap...to the foam...no ipact on the sub...b/c there is nothing to hit it...so i don't know what happened.....anyways...it was in a sealed box...and my friend decided after he bought two 12" Audiobahn's dual voice coil....400 rms handling...and is now selling them ( never used ) for $100 a piece...so i will just drop one into the box....
anyways.... i'm not to sure what the diff is between the dual voice coil and single is.....and if i should bridge my amp to one channel....or keep it at two...it will be in a sealed box...i've never really used dual vc before so ....any input would be appreciated.... |
It depends on what the ohm rating of each coil is on the Audiobahn - lets assume it's 4 ohms per coil:
Basically, wiring the coils in parallel will give you a total 2 ohm load to the amp. I doubt you Kenwood amp can handle a 2 ohm sub - it is probably rated for 4 ohm minimum when bridged. There are othe options - wire the coils in series - this will add the ohms - for a total of 8. Not the best option either, because your Kenwood amp rated for 300 watts is probably (again) at 4 ohms bridged - you'll only get 150 watts at 8 ohms. If the Audiobahn has dual 2 ohm coils, or dual 8 ohm coils, you'll be okay. Ifthey are 2 ohms each, wiring in series gives a total of 4 ohms. If they are 8 ohms each, wiring in parallel gives 4 ohms, also. You need more info on this sub first. Find out the specs, and reply - this might not be the sub for you. BTW - I made the same mistake, buying a DVC JBL sub - I basically couldn't use it. Luckily, I was able to sell it on eBay, and actually MADE money on it. I didn't know what the hell a DVC sub was either. Live and learn. Get the specs for the Audiobahn and post them. |
Been reading alot about Pioneer subs just cracking on the cone. Sheesh!
Also, don't just hook up one coil of a DVC sub. I don't think your amp is the best for a DVC sub. |
No doubt that you amp wouldn't handle a 2 ohm load...

when i bridge it down to one channel....it's running 2 ohms...all i have to do is run it paralell to the voice coils ( the sub must run 4 ohms total ) so that's 2 ohms each side ( total 4 ohms )....
it worked when i tried it...but the sub is VERY power hungry.....so when i turn it up...it fades at parts when there is a lot of bass... so i turned off the loud setting on my deck..and the low end down...and it sounds nice now...till i find a bigger amp... :dj: .... i'd like to find another 300 watt kenwood....bridge both down .....run the same signal to each amp...and run 2 ohms off each amp.....the placement in the trunk would be cool... |
Oh for sure man, any dual VC is power hungry. I had 2x12" Soundstream USA's running off a Reference 500sx. When I first installed it I cheaped out and ran 8awg wire to the amp. When I cranked it up for the first time it melted the coating right off the power wire.
So then i ran 1/0awg.... No more problems |
i've got 10 gauge down now...but when i get more power...i'll get 40 gauge from my buddy..he an electrician....so i get it for nothing...:P
|
40 gauge? That'd be a little thin don't you think? ;)
Just kidding - I'm sure you meant 4 gauge. |
wow...i gotta start reading what i type before i send it...yeah ...i meant 4 gauge....
