speaker sizes, stupid question, saw the sticky, still not sure
 

my fiance has a 2003 mazda protege dx, just curious as to what the factory speaker sizes are in it, id check, but im 1100 miles away at the moment and i dont want her tearing into things.

also, i havent torn into her car yet, im going to install a new head unit, amp and all that good stuff soon, any specialty tools needed for anything? the HU is a din1, and its been so long since ive even seen the car, is it a din 2? if so, where can i get something to fill the extra space, or would it be better to rig something up myself?

Well you have a couple of options for the dash. It is a double din stereo in the car. You can find another double din, but those are expensive. You can put in a single din, and put the ugly ass pocket filler. Or you can go to the local sound shop, and have them make up a plate.

Personally I find that last option the best. It smooths out the dash panel. And you can even get it custom embroidered to say anything you want. (One of the local shops uses vinyl on their plates) Other places might just use fiberglass that can be dyed to match. And have a logo or something painted on.

As for the speaker size I can't help you.

And for special tools, none is really needed besides patience. I hooked up a stereo system in my friends 02 Protege, and the hardest part was taking apart the dash. There's so much crap you have to unscrew and unhook. We found it easier to unhook the cables for the vent system.

thanks a lot, well, guess for a while she's gonna have a hole in her dash, unless i get the time to make up a plate. the wiring should be no problem, ill just splice all that in cause im too lazy to buy an adapter or whatever everyone says makes things easier. thanks a lot though man.

wow, you took apart the dash to get the stock cd player out?? Why didnt you just remove the cover clips on each side and use a butterknife to pull it out?!?

that post right there makes me quite happy, if i can do that... ill be a happy person, its just a matter of puttin in the new and gettin it to stay put.

Well we kinda had to take out the cd player to get the converter on for the RCA cables.

And you can keep your butter knife. Every install I have ever done looks professional. In all but one install I've done on cars, you could never tell the person had a stereo setup in his or her car. Unless you heard it, or the person opened up the trunk.

I did it the really easy way. I just pulled it off while I was really drunk. Came out fast, went in kinda fast... ya. Then again your talking to someone that tried to change his 4drs oil right after I had been run for an hour. I didnt know the oil was that hot....
