Speaker Installation Questions...

I just purchsed 5x7 replacements (Alpine Type-R) for the front. The depth that they have listed is 2.75". Some people say they will fit, some don't. They come with a .25" spacer ring for the mount. If I use this will I be able to get the door back on without noticing anything different and will that allow me enough depth?

Thanks!

I already answered this elseware....lol.....so go for it....just use the spacers and your new speakers will fit fine.....just check the clearance between the speaker and the seal ring on the back of the door panel.

Sir Nuke is right on the numbers, there is a good deal of clearance in the Protege doors, only caveat in check the clearnce with the windows down.
Cheap suggestion, try to salvage the water protection rings off the old speakers and reinstall on the new. They are there for a purpose, and they help keep the elements off the spyders.

agreed Dave....which is EXACTLY what I did before I ever got the first part for the upgrade I did a while back....

with the front door windows DOWN....IF your speakers mounting deepth is deeper than 2 1/2 inches, the window WILL hit the speaker.....so you will need spacers if your speakers are deeper than that....

also there is a SEAL RING on the door panel....the original stock speakers have a ring of foam around the front of them...and this ring protrudes from the door to the speaker and sorta seals them to direct the sound out and ONLY out through the grill.....the distance from the speaker to the door panel is about ONE INCH, so if you need to put spacers in behind the speaker to fix the door depth clearance problem....all you need to do is trim off this seal ring.

The rear doors are wide open....even with the window down you could put a speaker in there that is 4 1/2 inches deep of you wanted to with no problem.

IF you use 5 X 7's in the front doors (which I did) the rain guards will fit on the new speakers perfectly...if you use larger speakers you will have to modify them to use them. they are only stuck to the stock speaker and can be peeled off.

IF you use round speakers in the rear doors that are larger than 6's.....I used 6 1/2...the same thing applies...you will need to modify them to fit....but it wasn't hard to trim them out with some snips to make them work.
